I had all of Sven Hassel books back in the early seventies when I was in the armed forces but gave them all away. So I tried to re-capture the essence but it didn't work. I think it is because some of the books are not originals but later editions. The read has not changed, so if you like a good war story of a penal battalion with a group of misfits then you will like these books. I really enjoyed Liquidate Paris, Monte Cassino and Wheels of Terror.

Retreat is the only order the Wehrmacht is hearing as the Russians roll westwards and Sven, Tiny, The Old Man and the rest are retreating with them, while trying to break in some new recruits. Fom its beginning on the training grounds of Sennelager to its ending in the cemetery of Wola, this book is a little more sober than some other of the autho's offerings. There's some humour in the episode in the brothel and even some (of a very roughhouse kind) in the initial training scenes, but nothing liek the broadstroke stuff associated with the more recent novels.

Here the 27th cover the retreat from the Pripyet Marshes and The Old Man more or less has to take over from the elderly CO who starts going to pieces when he sees the results of the orders he gives. However, if you buy this thinking it will be a novel of the Warsaw Uprising, you will be disappointed. Only the final section is set in the city towards the end of the Poles' abortive attempt to throw off the German yoke. There are various references to characters and units involved in the fighting on the German side, most notably the notorious Dirlewanger and Kaminsky brigades and their loathsome leaders, but they are not central to the plot in any way. However, there is no detailed description of the rising or the AK.

Another interesting (and apocryphal) aside is the brief meeting of 2 section with a group of British SS volunteers heading off to save Europe from Bolshevism.

All in all a slightly above standard Sven offering and well worth reading if you are a fan but not if you are looking to learn anything about the '44 Rising.

Read about a factual based but fictional aspect from a german soldier's perspective. Fascinating and Sven Hassel manages to draw you in and keep you addicted! The only shame about all of his books is that they are not in historical order and the characters get a bit confusing as they are out of time sync.

It is a good story. I read it a long time ago, and still have my paperback copy. But why the high price ? Only a serious collector would pay this sort of money !

My husband is a long time fan of Sven Hassel. He was delighted with his book - and along with a few others has kept him happy for days now :)
