"The reader is drawn into a world of Machiavellian intrigue where the struggle for power among the women of the seraglio influences the politics of both the East and the West."-"Library Journa"l

Product Description

From harem slaves to empresses with global power, the Reign of the Favored Women was a watershed period in world history. The great Turkish empire of the seventeenth century, the most powerful of its day, was ruled by women who had been brought to Constantinople as slaves for the Sultan's pleasure -- but used their slavery to acquire power on a global scale.

The Venetian-born Safiye, "the Fair One" as she is known, is the embodiement of the newly coined term "Machiavellian". With her perfumed body and bewitching eyes, she rules the men who own her. She controls the Empire from within the veiled harem walls, her web of intrigue reaching far beyond Constantinople and into Europe. Her touch is felt in wars, acts of sabotage, and the machinations of both European and Asian politics. The aim of her ambition? To see that her son becomes ruler of the Ottoman Empire. She will allow nothing to stand in her way.

Format:Mass Market Paperback
In this exquisate portrait of harem life in the Turkish empire, Ann Chamberlain creates a story of murder, hate, love, infidelity, innocence and power. Seen through the eyes of a eunich, the intricacy of the royal harem is revealed. In this period of history it is the favoured women who hold the power. The center of the story, Safiye, is a beautiful young woman who seeks to control an empire through the sultan(her master), and then her son. The eunich(Abdullah), his lady(the Grand Vizier's wife), and her daughter are caught up in tidal wave of this woman's ambition. Abdullah must do his utmost to protect his ladies from this woman's ambtion. Wars are lost and won from behind the silken curtains of the harem. Safiye will stop at nothing to get the power she desires. She takes lovers, orders murders, and betrays many. Through all of this she has no friend but her ambition.

Format:Hardcover
