5.0 out of 5 stars Simply stunning. 6 April 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
'Desert Music' is simply stunning. Steve Reich has forged a unique way of writing, a potent mixture of the melodic vocal style of 'Tehillim' or 'Proverb' with the repetitive structures of 'Drumming' or 'Sextet'. This is also perhaps Reich's most overt use of message in his composition: he uses the desert concept both to point to the environmental disaster implicit in current use of technology, and also as a harbour for thought, harking back perhaps to the vigils in the desert of the Bible. This cd cannot be too highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transformational Music 30 Oct 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I don't know where I go when I listen to this piece, and it's not always the same place, but when I come back things often look different. The extreme simplicity of the words (by William Carlos Williams) can easily hide their profound message, but Steve Reich's exquisite music allows them to permeate in a way that makes an emotional connection inevitable. Please buy this record.

5.0 out of 5 stars the desert music 8 Feb 2005
By Adam
Format:Audio CD
this is simply the most magnificent tone poem I have ever heard.
When I was young I would hum music in my head and wish that someone could transcribe it down on paper. Someone has! only far more beautifully than anything I could imagine.
Reich has always remaind true to his personal musical philosophy
and in this work he gives us every variation in great depth.
no collection should be without this work. His masterpeace
