Book Description

This collection includes the story "Regulars," along with a bonus story, "Funeral Games." Two great short stories in one ebook!

In the raucous story "Regulars," it's the beginning of the school year, and the University is tearing down establishments all around the Faux Pas Lounge.

The regulars at the lounge, who pronounce it "Fox Pass," are a band of characters--a newspaper columnist, a plumber, a failed painter who begins painting a mural in exchange for a bar tab. They can only watch the gentrification and celebrate their weirdness, until they must face the possible demise of their beloved watering hole.

Meanwhile, Marty, a maintenance worker on the University's painting crew, tries to get together with Dr. Oki Fujita, a foul-mouthed regular who teaches in the Chemistry Department.

For fans of Flannery O'Connor, Larry Brown, and Carl Hiaasen, "Regulars" is a raucous tale of a band of friends caught up in of town-and-gown trouble. Can art and permanence and originality survive the heavy hand of the University? Can a working man and a Ph. D. make it work?

"Regulars" was originally published in the acclaimed literary journal Eleven Eleven.

This short story is 7,125 words long, or 29 book pages.
Funeral Games is the gritty story of two small brothers watching as their life crumbles around them. Since their mother left them, their father has fallen into a drunken depression. Worse yet, their ramshackle house was built on a limestone bed and is falling fast into a sinkhole.

Narrated by one of the young brothers unschooled in proper grammar, the voice reveals more than it knows. The boys entertain themselves the best way they know, by giving each other mock funerals, in the midst of the efforts of Mr. Tock and others to save the family.

In the face of this despair, the two little boys cling to hope and find humor and resilience in their situation together.

Originally published in The Oyster Boy Review literary journal.

Regulars appears to be an exercise in writing characters. Imagine that someone showed a writer a diorama of a bar that contained a smattering of people and props. This short story is an interesting one that could have been written based on such a prompt. I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear that this was the end result of a writing class or group.

Even though this short is only 349 Kindle locations, I found each character distinct and interesting. Lawly revealed them in unique ways. The author was also able to incorporate sounds, texture, and smells wonderfully. The storyline contains ample subtleties and symbolism - many serious and thought-provoking. I thought it was all very well done. If this were for a paper or college course, I sure hope the author received an A.

Unique writing that I enjoyed. Check it out yourself.
