Book Description

4 Feb 1999 0099436663 978-0099436669

Reginald Iolanthe Perrin is surely one of the best loved comedy heroes of our time, in both literature and television. This omnibus brings together the first three Reginald Perrin novels containing a lifetime's outrageous and hilarious adventures.

When we first meet Reggie, he is sick to death with selling exotic ices at Sunshine Desserts. Driven to desperation by the rat race and the unpunctuality of Britain's trains, Reggie's small eccentricites escalate to the extreme, until finally he leaves the unacceptable face of capitalism behind by driving off in a stolen motorised jelly. In his pursuit of the unconventional, he devotes himself to faking his own death, opening a shop devoted to selling completely useless goods, and setting up a commune strictly for the middle-class and middle-aged.

Join Reggie, who didn't get where he is today without some help from some memorable supporting characters, in one man's quest to avoid an everyday existence.

Review

A delicious entertainment, as comic and as sharp as they come (Guardian )

The funniest character ever to emerge from the world of the commuter (Daily Express )

David Nobbs's The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin is hilarious from start to finish and boasts an undercurrent of poignant seriousness. I would urge anyone who hasn't read it to do so. (Nicholas Royle )

Book Description

A classic collection of the hilarious Reginald Perrin books: The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin, The Return of Reginald Perrin and The Better World of Reginald Perrin. Reggie, the creation of comedy genius David Nobbs, has been immortalised in two BBC TV series; the 1970s original starring Leonard Rossiter of Rising Damp fame and the 2009 remake starring Martin Clunes from Men Behaving Badly.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I was only nine when the television series,The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin first hit our screens in 1976. I started reading the books a few years later and was amazed that all the best bits from the series were there as well as lots of background and situations that were not in the series. The writing is very clever and very funny, and helps the reader have a clear picture on the personalities of the main characters, of which there are many.

Reading this again has made me realise how much I sometimes hate the stresses and strains of commuter life, but having this to read on my long train journey makes it that much easier.

David nobbs is a brilliant writer, and he combines that superb talent with fantastic observations of real life. Reggie's rollercaoster ride through life and the inane situations in which he finds himself, are just as true today as when he was created 30 years ago. Compelling reading, which brings both tears of laughter and tears of sadness.

5.0 out of 5 stars RIP, Reggie! 16 July 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
You cannot fail to admire Reggie Perrin-he got where he did by cocking a snook at everyone. He personifies that element of rebelliousness that we all supress, yet wish that we had the courage to explore. Damn the consequences with a 'why not' is his philosophy, and it works, goddammit! The Perrin stories are hilarious, and yet there is more to them than just a series of comic novels. Wodehouse describes his two formulae for writing a novel, and with RIP, David Nobbs has achieved both in one fell swoop. Reggie is the George Goodnight who didn't get the same opportunites; Ronnie Barker summed it up in his review-I laughed and I cried-what a marvellous, funny book.

When Reggie and Elizabeth leave their clothes on Chesil Bank, and are accosted by a tramp who 'didn't get where he got today without asking for 10p for a cup of tea' and who indicates the public telescope, you know what will happen, you hope and pray that it will happen, and when it does, you cheer, for in this crazy mixed up world, there is a little bit of sanity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, and sad. Brilliant.
Re-reading this after many years, a teenager when it first appeared, I am struck as much by the pathos as the humour. Nobbs writes brilliantly. He doesn't try to be artful. Read more
