Product Description

Taken from This Is PiL their first album in 20 years the single will also contain various live tracks taken from the band s monumental performance at New York City s Terminal 5 in 2010. The Reggie in Reggie Song is a real person and a good friend of John Lydon s from the multicultural melting pot of Finsbury Park in North London where they both grew up. Reggie Song is self-funded by PiL and will be released on PiL s own label PiL Official via Cargo UK Distribution. All the new material was recorded in the UK last year at Steve Winwood s studio in the Cotswolds. This Is PiL- The release of the album This Is PiL earlier this year resulted in the below response from various media: MOJO Magazine- 4 out of 5 "It's simply a joy to hear Lydon in fine voice, getting stuck into thorny matters with his own unique, raw nerve gusto, backed by a cookin' band" The Times- 4 out of 5 "Never mind the Pistols- this PiL is worth taking The Guardian- 4 out of 5 stars ...."You're more often struck by Lydon's determination to keep pushing forward into uncharted territory, to head as he puts it on the track of the same name, for deeper water" The Quietus "This is a 63 minute chunk of music that wavers marvellously from the irresistible, the effortlessly accessible to the downright weird" Loud & Quiet Magazine- 8 out of 10 "This Is PiL is an evolution; a step forward with eyes locked straight ahead, no heads looking back at past glories" Q Magazine- 4 out of 5 "Representing the experimental instincts of Lydon the teenage Can fan, it sees him putting his ire to use over spectrally funky tracks warped and shaped by Lu Edmonds's byzantine guitars" Drowned In Sound- 8 out of 10 ...."It comfortably manages to be what a comeback strives to be but seldom is; adventurous, celebratory and - above all - adding to an already admirable legacy" Music - 5 out of 5 "This is Public Image Ltd at its best. This record is good. Outrageously good" "He sounds vital on these songs, so goddamn vital, a man and a band with more ideas than they know what to do with" Buy this record. This is PiL. Isn t that enough for you?"

Having already bought the album, which already contains the studio tracks Reggie Song and Out of the Woods, I bought this mainly for the live tracks, recorded in NYC in 2010. Lydon seems to have been struggling a bit vocally on the night the recording was made, but the listening experience is amazing nonetheless. This band put on one hell of a live show and these traks ably demonstrate that.

5 stars!

This "EP" (47 minutes - would have been a long LP back in the 70s!) is a thing of two parts: two studio tracks, which are identical mixes and edits (though possibly mastered a shade louder?) to the versions on This Is PiL and therefore probably owned already by most potential buyers - for anyone who hasn't heard that album, much of it is at least as good as anything else PiL have issued since Album and far better live. And John Lydon is a far stronger singer than he used to be - as in he's obviously done some serious voice training - I don't share the other reviewer's view that he was struggling vocally on the live material here, he's in decent voice, though if anything he was even better a couple of years later.

So the important thing here is the 31 minutes of live material recorded at Terminal 5, New York on 18 May 2010. At this early stage of PiL's revived existence, they weren't yet performing any new material. And although they played songs from the Levene/Wobble era when I saw them in October 2012 (and presumably did at this concert) the earliest song here is 4 Enclosed Walls from their "difficult" 1981 album Flowers Of Romance. Psychopath is from Lydon's post-PiL solo album and the remaining 3 songs are from the late 80s/early 90s era of PiL, with some continuity here because 2 of that band (Lu Edmonds and Bruce Smith) have returned in the revived PiL.

I can't emphasise strongly enough what an excellent band this version of PiL are - a rock-solid and intelligent rhythm section and a highly psychedelic (in a completely non-hippie way, maaan) wall of guitars and saz from the excellent Lu Edmonds.
