Sue Wilkes paints a vivid and informative picture of Regency society in the county. Her research into all aspects of life for both rich and poor is exemplary; but this is no dry, historical tome. Regency Cheshire sparkles with enthralling descriptions and accounts about the everyday lives of the elite, contrasting their opulent lifestyle of assembly balls, racing, hunting and shooting, with the appalling conditions of factory workers and lowly farmers trying to make ends meet. The characters she lovingly resurrects are depicted as real people, set against a background of turbulent political conflict where duels took place on a whim, fortunes were gambled away, and where a woman might still be restrained with a 'scold'. This book is full of fascinating tidbits related in a style that is both entertaining and a pleasure to read.
