These boots are from my experience good, general walking boots. They have some notable qualities but 1 drawback :
1. They are lightweight, lace-up well, well padded inside and are very comfortable when walking, most notably on surfaces which offer limited shock absorption such as roads/concrete paths. Ventilation is OK, but my socks are often a bit moist in small patches from sweat after lengthy durations on hot days.
2. The toe area is nice and roomy for those of us with wide feet...
3. The ankle support is excellent. There must be some kind of rigid plate in the back area of the boot as it will not 'collapse' like some boots when you put them on and it gives tremendous support when worn.
4. Their grip in the dry is superb. I've just got back from mountain hiking in Utah, USA where a lot of the time you need to climb/descend smooth VERY steep sandstone slopes (some in excess of 45 degrees, believe me !). After gaining my 'trust' with their grip, I found I was able to walk daintily up or down the rock slopes in a style almost akin to a mountain goat (I am NOT light) !
5. I haven't walked in pouring rain (I see other reviews raise concerns in those conditions) but when trudging through deep/sodden mud in the Peak District my feet suffered no water ingress...
BAD
Their grip on smooth surfaces which are wet. If there is something for the sole to grip on they're fine, but if the surface is smooth or, for example, covered in damp moss prepare yourself for a slide - the grip disappears and makes walking quite dangerous (I've come a cropper a few times, so avoid those surfaces with these boots now). I dread to think what might have happened if I had tried to cross a river I came across which had a tempting series of stepping slabs to traverse the width - luckily a bridge cropped up shortly afterwards....
In summary, excellent dry weather boots with fantastic grip on dry/smooth surfaces, tremendous ankle support and front area room. Generally OK in the wet until you have to traverse smooth, potentially slippery, surfaces.
