First things first. The Rega Planar 2 I bought this for was bought in 1992 during my first year at University, and has been getting pretty regular use in all the 21 years I've had it. I've bought upgrades that have made a significant difference over the years - going from the original Rega Bias cartridge to a Linn K5 and to its current Audio Technica AT120 E, and also upgrading to an ART USB external phono stage. A noticeable improvement was made at each step. I was a little sceptical that upgrading the motor would make a huge sonic difference, and it hasn't, but it is definitely a noticeable improvement. The fundamental sound is still very Rega Planar family (which is a good thing!), but the timing has improved (presumably due to more accurate speed control of the motor), the sound is a bit crisper and the background surface noise has reduced a fair bit, which is especially noticeable when listening via headphones.

I found the motor, circuit board and new cover very easy to fit, as I'm no stranger to soldering or electronics. For anyone who has ever used a soldering iron, this is a very simple DIY project.

The instructions however do have an annoying error. There are two spacers provided for the motor fitting. The instructions advise using the thinner spacer for the Planar 2/P2/RP1, and the the thicker spacer for the Planar3/P3 etc. Common sense alarm bells told me this was incorrect, but I blindly followed the instructions anyway only to discover that using the thinner spacer resulted in the motors pulley wheel touching the bottom of the platter on my Planar 2. Which makes sense really, as I would imagine the P3 has a thicker plinth hence requiring a thinner spacer versus the Planar 2 which has a thinner plinth hence requiring the thicker spacer.

Although this isn't a difficult kit to fit it helps if you have a rudimentary knowledge of using a soldering iron. If not, I'd recommend you have it fitted by a Rega dealer. Most will fit it for a small charge if not free.
If you feel a need to upgrade your turntable, this really is the best upgrade you can make.
Having owned a planar 2 for years I was amazed at the difference in imaging, tightness of bass and absence of any flutter. I now just listen to the music not the turntable.
This upgrade does facilitate the add-on of Rega's new power supply, but unless you play a lot of 45's the money's better spent on a decent cartridge like an Ortofon 2M and some new vinyl.

I bought this with a view to get the external power supply later for easier speed change.
Sound wise I am sure it is better, but its hard to do a back to back comparison obviously.
Needs soldering to install, but it is straight forward enough.

Only dislike is the height adjustment, the motor mounts on double sided foam pads, and you just stick them together to get the height right.
It would have been nice to be ale to use the original screw fixing system, but perhaps this is a sound transmission issue.
overall great upgrade.
