Product Description

An intimate portrait of the infamous gangster by the only person that really knows the truth: Reg's wife, Roberta Kray.

Book Description

A MAN APART discovers who the real Reg Kray was, deconstructing the man lost beneath the layers of attitude and opinion, exaggeration and distortion, destined to spend so much of his life behind bars. As Reg's confident, Roberta was closer to him than anyone, enabling her to write frankly about the Reg she knew, how he became such a vilified figure and what he really thought about his past and his strange fame. Drawing on official documents, Reg's correspondence and their own conversations over the years, Roberta reveals a previously unkown side of Reg's personality, his conflict with Ron and his first tragic marriage. She also details the development of her own love affair, from their first meeting in 1996 to Reg's death in October 2000. This is the first and only inside story of the real Reg Kray. Balanced, insightful, and most of all honest, it brings to light the real man behind the myth.

By Mr. R. Ellor VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is certainly no bland biography. Not even close.

Roberta Kray tells the world about the Reg Kray she met, married and stayed with until his last breath. Any student of sixties gangland history needs to read this book, as instead of the two-dimensional TV image of a gangster Roberta leaves the reader knowing of a complete, human and complex person. In that respect there can be no better tribute to her late husband.

No punches are pulled whatsoever. Where Roberta considers other major crime faces to have acted dishonourably, she tells it as she sees it. The bisexuality Reg eventually admitted to is dealt with in a sensible and relevant way, without any bitterness or repackaging. The East End days are sensibly left to other authors and accounts as this isn't what her book concerns.

The author has produced a mature and intimately detailed account of her time with Reg which is neither over-sentimental or awestruck; and is therefore an excellent compliment to the many other books written about the Kray legend.

a real man 8 Mar 2004
Format:Paperback
Roberta Kray writes a touching biography of the man behind the public persona. You get a real feeling for who he really was, without the glitz and glamour of being one of the worlds most notorious gangsters. He was a real, breathing feeling man who suffered the same trials and tribulations of us all. The book illustrates he was not always the hard man. A heart rending story.

Moving and sad tale 10 Nov 2009
By Jilly
Format:Paperback
I found this book very moving. Roberta speaks from the heart. She told the truth about how appallingly Reg Kray was treated in prison and how he fought for his freedom which he so deserved. His brother Ron was treated appallingly as well. Reg had continuous knock-backs but still came up fighting. Roberta is such a lovely and warm person, how she stood by Reg and did so much for him, not many people could do that. Roberta was the best thing that happened to Reg, she was his rock and his soul mate. It's a pity they did not meet long before they did. Roberta really loved him, I know this as I visit the Krays graveside regular and have seen lovely wreaths, baskets of flowers and touching messages from Roberta often. If it weren't for Roberta, poor Reggie would have died in prison. She was with him to his sad ending, he died in her arms. Reg died a free man, something he always wanted, but he was very ill with cancer. This is such a sad story and what makes it worse it that's it's a true story. Even though Roberta was angry at lots of people and the authorities about the terrible way Reg was treated, she never bad mouthed anyone. This is a true book and anyone who thinks bad about the Krays should read this and then make their judgements. Reg was not a violent gangster at the end, as the media try to make us believe. He reformed and should've been freed a long time ago, to be able to live a normal life with his lovely wife. It was sheer cruelty to keep him in prison so long. This has just got to be the best and most truthful book ever written about the Krays.
