The Action were a truly authentic mod band with great tunes and as Paul Weller stated on the Action Packed sleeve notes 'Reg King is one of the best white soul singers.' Well here he is on his one and only solo album which is rightly regarded as one of the lost classics. A ramshackle recording process which started in 1968 and finished in 1971 with who knows how many guest musicians yet the production while somewhat erratic is very 'wall of sound' at times and Reggie's vocals remain effortlessly soulful and genuine throughout. Action fans will spot 2 tracks from their superb Rolled Gold' album here but my highlight is the rolling 'You Go Have Yourself A Good Time' however there isn't a bad track on the album. Do yourself a favour and buy this quick.

LOST CLASSIC 6 April 2010
Format:Audio CD
It's no exaggeration to say this is a lost classic.

I was first exposed to the soaring 'Little Boy' last year on a reissue compilation. It made me want to get the album, and I wasn't disappointed. Reg King's voice commands attention and the music is epic in sweep.

This album is particularly useful for listening to in the afternoon, between work and dinner...

Quite A Surprise 14 Feb 2008
By Fred Rayworth - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I am actually reviewing a reel to reel copy of the original album, burned to CD. I found this album in the base library at Torrejon AB in Spain. I'd just got a reel to reel tape deck and went crazy recording everything that even looked remotely interesting. Unfortunately, I recorded so much, I never got around to actually listening to this stuff until 36 years later!

The sound fidelity of my copy to CD is horrible, with everything skewed to the right channel and the sound muffled, the vocals buried in the background. Despite all, I really like this album. The first few songs remind me of Pete Townshend, not in the music but the vocal style. It is very British sounding. Not bad songs but then things get really interesting with two poppish cuts with In My Dreams, and Little Boy. After only listening to this album one or maybe two times 36 years ago, I instantly remembered those two songs as I heard them again. The rest of the album has some good songs too, but they require a few more listens to really get into.

Overall, this is a lost gem that should have done much better. Then again, there are literally hundreds of albums out there that deserve more. So much for the music biz. A lost gem. Highly recommended.

Reg King - self-titled (Circle) 3 1/2 stars 11 Nov 2009
By Mike Reed - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Originally released in 1971 - as this is the only solo effort by the former Action vocalist. You get the lp's initial tracks + seven remixes of the album's actual songs. Couple here that I found to be inspiring were the (sort of) Procol Harum-like "You Go Have Yourself A Good Time", the jamming "That Ain't Living" and the twelve-minute "Savannah". Check out the impressive personnel: Reg King-guitar & vocals, Brian Auger-keyboards, Brian Belshaw-bass & vocals, George Barker- trumpet, Ian Whiteman-flute, Mick Taylor-guitar, Barry Jenkins-drums and Doris Troy & Brenda French-vocals. Overall, not a bad pick.
