Refused were a hardcore band that comprised four of the most passionate, revolutionary-minded individuals ever to have emerged from the hot-bed of creativity that is Umea - a small town in the north of Sweden. During their all-too-brief existence, they mixed cutting-edge punk-rock sounds with neo-Marxist politics and gained legendary status thanks to some truly incendiary live shows, of which a few glimpses are shown here. In 1997, they recorded their last album, The Shape of Punk To Come: a milestone in recording history that still makes for astonishing listening today. Unfortunately, the pressure of maintaining the momentum and of living up to their own expectations proved too great, and just four dates into an American tour the following year the band imploded, after police put a halt to what was to be their last ever gig.

This film, made by guitarist Kristofer Steen, recounts the story of their sudden demise through the use of recently filmed interviews with band-members (including Dennis Lyxzen, scissor-kicking frontman now with The (International) Noise Conspiracy) and footage dating back to the period under scrutiny. The interviewees are lucid and honest in all that they say, especially regarding their feelings towards one another, while first person-narrative voice-overs help to shed further light on what was going on in the minds of those concerned.

Like the band, this film seems to end a little too quickly for my liking, but to Steen's credit he doesn't dwell unnecessarily on any aspect of the story. The making of this film, however, was necessary, as there remained some unanswered questions in the immediate aftermath of the break-up, and ...Dead gives fans and band-members alike closure on Refused. It also serves as a timely reminder of what a fantastic band they were and a cautionary tale for any aspiring punk-rock band wishing to change the world...
