Product Description

From Amazon.com

In proximity to all their gloriously conceptualized full-length albums, Refried Ectoplasm is surely an odd one, a motley collection of singles and rare tracks, each a miniature by a band whose career has been built on experiments that typically took a whole CD to flesh out. Refried, though, far exceeds the totality of its parts. The singles are distinct, and so not terribly obvious as cogs in a machine, but they're also almost flawless. Stereolab's keyboard colors are all over the place, lighting up "Lo Boob Oscillator," and Laetitia Sadier's droney, airy vocals seem ever in contrast to the music. A guitar-rich, even-rhythm universe prevails across these tracks, giving Refried a slow-burn fever that rings equally with grit and sonically playful quirks. It might be a collection of musical short stories in comparison to their sometimes weirdly epic novels, but it's in French and it's arty and squiggly. And by comparison, again, to their more keyboardy moments (of which there are many elsewhere in the band's catalog), this is a sonic tractor. --Andrew Bartlett

This is the second in the "Switched On" trilogy of Stereolab rarities, b-sides & out-takes. So, this should sound like a random jumble of noodling; a hotch-potch of filler and rejects? Right?

Wrong. This is one of my favourite Stereolab albums.

Perhaps because the album has such a consistent sound with recurring themes spread throughout the tracks, this collection hangs together superbly as an album in its own right. From the angry one-chord solos in "Harmonium" to the gentle come-down of "Tempter", it's an exhillarating and satisfying journey. For example... the opening track is revisited in "Revox" with a renewed energy, "French Disco" is a nice jangly take on The Groops finest moment, and "Eloge d'Eros" offers the finest ever example of the vocal sparring between Mary Hansen and Laetitia Sadier. "Tone Burst [country]" is jaunty and irreverent, yet the next track "Animal or Vegetable" is a monstrous assault of difficult listening.

This is the best of the Switched On series, and possibly even their best album. Unintentionally, of course.

History of the Groop 16 Nov 2001
Format:Audio CD
For record collectors the delight of getting small press releases with hand-painted sleeves and other sundry delights is surely some kind of psychological obsession (guilty!). This compilation is a treat to those like myself who have not gone to expense and trouble of hunting down and acquiring the masses of limited edition vinyl that Stereolab puts out. Refried Ectoplasm collects many of the impossibly hard to find Stereolab releases from the 1990s and what's better is you don't have to bankrupt yourself to get them this way.

Much of the music fits the guitar driven drone-pop the band are well known for but there are other surprises that hint at what was to follow this release. "Farfisa" is like a quirky folk song, "French Disko" is a knockout rock track and the fabulous "Lo Boob Oscillator" is a boyant 1960's bubblegum track. This is not my favourite compilation (Aluminium Tunes offers a lot more) but is an important document showcasing the niche carved out by the groop in the early to mid-1990's .

Essential Stereolab 4 Jun 2011
By Jason
Format:MP3 Download
One of Stereolab's great albums. Surprisingly, although this is a collection of odds and sods, B-sides, etc, it sounds just as good as any regular album, if not better. There is nothing second-rate about any of these songs, which include some of Stereolab's finest.

As with a lot of Stereolab albums, it gets off to a chirpy start, settles into a long and sleepy experimental interlude, comes roaring back, and then waves goodbye on a note of poignant sadness.

This early album has a lot more energy than Stereolab's later work. That energy is exemplified by the rousing "French Disko", Stereolab's most popular track and a sort of calling card for the "groop".

Essential for any Stereolab fan.
