Prior to purchasing a scanner I read reviews of the various contenders and eventually opted for the Refelecta ProScan 7200. Whilst it was a tad more expensive than other models I went ahead and made the purchase.

The product arrived on the date as promised, albeit a bit late in the day. It was undamaged and took a few minutes to assemble. I was surprised to note that the mains plug was a two pinned continental type, not what one expects on computer products sold in the UK market. Not a drama though, as the use of a three pin adaptor solved the problem. The Cyberview X drivers took 3-4 attempts before I got them to load properly, the Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 however loaded first time.

The enclosed user's manual is specifically for the 7200 model and made no mention of the ProScan 7200 model whatsoever. This is not problematic in that the Cyberview X programme is used on both. To my untrained eye, both scanners appear to have the same specifications, the only difference being the ProScan7200 outer casing differs from the 7200 by having plastic holders for guiding the negatives through the scanner, whereas on the 7200 they are manually guided through the machine. Pretty expensive pieces of plastic I reckon, but it makes the process more precise.

The machine is easy to operate without reading the user's manual. There is however a need to ensure that ICE is not activated when copying B+W negatives. By adjusting the ROC and GEM settings you can enhance quality of the finished copy. There have been instances when it has singularly failed to identify 35mm colour slides, but this may be down to operator error!

On prescan, the machine runs silkily smooth with little noise - there is however a loud metallic crunching sound when you operate full scan. I'm not sure if this is normal, or just specific to this particular device.

The copying process is much quicker than I anticipated - the quality of the end product is also pretty good. All in all I'm pleased with the product - but if the crunching noise persists over the next few days I will contact Amazon.

This scanner is Lion compatible, however the scanners firmware needs to be updated to version 1.03 prior to connecting the scanner to your computer.

The Firmware update and Lion disc image are freely available on the, less than user friendly, Reflecta website.

The problem is that the firmware is updated via CyberViewX twain interface which you cannot install on your MAC until you have updated the firmware!!!
Trawling through the FAQ's and help on the Reflecta website was useless, they make no suggestion on exactly how you achieve this.

I finally managed it (to my shame) by having to use Windows! on an old laptop, that should have been retired years ago, I eventually managed to install the firmware update. After that all went well, software and hardware installed and working in Lion in no time.

I must say I'm very satisfied with the scanning results so far and over all I would recommend it.

Hopefully by the time you purchase yours the firmware\software will have been updated and these issues will have disappeared.
