This review is from: Referee: A Year in the Life of David Elleray (Hardcover)
It makes a refreshing change to read a book about the nations favourite sporting obsession which has obviously been written by an intelligent and articulate man who has a passion not only for football, but for his job as a Housemaster at Harrow School.
David Elleray combines the two tasks with a seemingly consumate ease, speaking of his fears for the game in one paragraph, then of his love for his school, and the traditions and excellence which it stands for. Most of us, I feel, would not be able to give one of these roles as much as he does. His committment and dedication to both is admirable-whether attending and organising meetings, dealing with the media, granting students time for interviews, or answering his many fan letters, he gives each and every individual the same care and attention he would anyone. Mr Elleray seems, to coin a phrase, "...a very nice man..."
I was intrigued to see if he would touch upon his private life. Admirably, he placed in one brief "taster", speaking of a "lady friend" who he spends New Years Eve with. I was glad to read this, as, despite his seemingly endless list of friends, it is good to know that the multi-talented, multi-tasking Mr Elleray has a shoulder to cry on, and perhaps someone to cuddle up to when it all gets too much-as sometimes it seems as if it just might be...
Revelaing insights into the game, and his relationship with players and officials alike give him a very human and almost "Uncle"-like image-no wonder he is a popular Godfather! Indeed, the whole book seems to deal with relationships-with said players, fellow refs-but also his school, fellow masters and pupils, and friends. And himself. In a world full of corporate values and polital manouvering at all levels of life, it is refreshing to see there are people around who do, despite what their image might suggest, cares about ehat he does, and his fellow individuals.
A class above most of today's ghost-written soccer efforts. Recommended.

A joy to read, and an inspiration to the lazy. How Elleray combines a busy worklife and the huge stress and time pressure of an international referee are an amazement in itself. Written as a diary through one season it is impossible to stop reading.
A fantastic book that will be of interest to all involved in any small way with the world's greatest game.
