Product Description

Described as a "magnificent album" - Dr. Mick Moloney and a "treasure trove of Irish music and history2" REED ONLY is the eagerly awaited release from piper Brian McNamara and concertina player Tim Collins. This new "ground breaking recording1" featuring two of Irish music's most highly respected performers, underlines the "unique empathy between the Uilleann pipes and its bean cháirdin successor" and is "an exhilarating music journey which soars effortlessly into heights of artistry where virtuosity is always balanced by supreme tastfulness" - Dr. Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than wild, perhaps, 23 Sep 2007

This review is from: Reed Only (Audio CD)
A beautifully played CD, this, done simply and with care. The blurb (see above) is a bit silly, since it's not at all 'ground-breaking', but doesn't try to be, and that's one of its strengths. The playing really is lovely, carefully ornamented but not over-fussy, and with room to beathe, with most tracks starting up from a standing start and moving into a natural pulse, rather from the clockwork of a click-track. There's a good mix of well-known tunes and some rarities. The backing (bouzouki, harp, piano) is kept well back in the mix. This sometimes makes for an ambient, tinkly texture when a tune might like a bit more push; must admit, once or twice I longed for some Cape Breton pianist to stomp around and make some havoc. It never quite becomes as moving as it might've been, with the tunes played a regulation three times round; everything's very well-ordered. In all, a really nice cottage garden, colourful and neatly put-together. If you like trad music a bit raw or wild, then maybe this wouldn't be your cuppa. But it really does grow on you. I've been playing it a lot.
