Product Description

Product Description

After a short and bloody war on foreign soil, the Expeditionary Army of Ashkent is preparing to return home. Captain Jon Forge and his company, however, are assigned one more task - to oversee a workforce of enslaved Bantusai tribesmen as they rebuild a remote and long-abandoned bridge. With construction already underway, a band of fleeing trappers brings news of a fast-approaching barbarian horde and the Captain quickly realises that his de facto commander, the devious Duke Burns, has sent him and his men into a deadly trap. Should the company stay or retreat? Despite the overwhelming odds stacked against them, Forge - ever the hard-headed professional soldier - decides to stay. With the help of a motley crew that includes the enigmatic Bantusai, the wily trappers, and a lacklustre wizard-cum-bureaucrat named Portal, the Captain and his men hastily set about rebuilding the dilapidated fort next to the bridge and prepare to make a stand. Their doom, it seems, is inescapable: their redoubt - a patched-up tower house - will surely be their tomb... Part hardboiled war novel, part epic fantasy, Redoubt is a gripping, darkly witty riff on the age-old story of men fighting against the odds. With its realistic battle scenes and gritty portrayal of soldiers at war, this is fantasy writing at its hard-hitting best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent debut, 16 Feb 2009
By Mr. R. C. Auty "Trancewarriors" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a superbly compelling read. The story is very strong and littered with interesting characters. It is easy to read and keeps you going right to the end. Redoubt fits into the fantasy genre, but is more a military thriller/adventure story. There are some fantasy elements, a little magic is used, but it is only briefly touched upon, elves, dwarves and goblins are all mentioned, although only one half elf actually appears, leaving huge scope for a sequal or two. The rest of the protagonists are various races of men, and the authors' own military experience shines through, obvious with the liberal use of strong and colourful language, some of which almost doesn't fit in the setting, but can be forgiven for the resulting humourous elements.
Overall a well told story and a promising debut novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting, immersive and a refreshingly realistic take on the fantasy genre., 28 April 2009
By Mr. G. B. Shackleton "Beastmaster" (Saffron Walden, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Exciting, immersive and a refreshingly realistic take on the fantasy genre. The narrative triggers your imagination with ease and envelopes you in a fantasy world where the action is explosive and detailed in a way that could only be achieved through actual experience. A healthy dose of humour added into the mix maintains the gritty "realness" of war but makes this book a friendly portal to an exciting world and satisfying story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hearlds a major new talent in fantasy writing, 21 Jan 2009
By Matthew Grapes - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A gripping page turner from start to finish. Not since Raymond Feist's "Magician" have I been so impressed by a debut novel. Janaway's military background seems to lend the story an authenticity that chimes true throughout. You can imagine Sergeant Mac's complaints about the weather and food being repeated by soldiers across the ages. For those who want to dig a little deeper, the story of a futile expeditionary war carries parallels with the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan
