4.0 out of 5 stars Great vintage comedy 11 July 2012

This is basically a copy of my review of the first volume. As with vol 1, this Region 1 release WILL play on a R2 DVD player. The prints used for this release are generally very poor, which personally I can live with as I love these comedies, but I felt I had to knock off a star because of the poor quality. There are no extras or subtitles.

This collection of 10 shorts were produced in the 1930's & 40's, and provide almost 3 hours of great comedy entertainment. Edgar Kennedy was a great foil for the legendary Laurel & Hardy in a number of their comedy shorts. Here, the much put-upon Kennedy suffers at the hands of his manipulative wife & her cheeky, leeching mother and brother. Our hapless hero huffs and puffs to no avail, as his resentment builds. The master of the 'slow-burn' continually suffers abuse & ridicule at the hands of family and friends alike. The vastly underrated Edgar Kennedy certainly had great comic timing, and fully deserved his own series of short comedies, which display a true comedy legend at work. Great fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Edgar Kennedy, genius. 19 Dec 2011
There is a 'review' giving three stars because the 'reviewer' didn't know what was on the DVD yet...lame.
It pushes a rating down for a true classic and Amazon should look into removing such missives.

Possibly the highest compliment I can make, without giving a potted history of his career, is that Laurel and Hardy thought enough of him to work with them on many occasions.

A Merchant of Menace (1933)
An Apple in His Eye (1941)
Baby Daze (1939)
Feather Your Nest (1944)
Hold Your Temper (1943)
I'll Build it Myself (1946)
I'll Fix It (1941)
Prunes and Politics (1944)
Rough on Rents (1942)
Westward Ho-Hum (1941)

As I said on the first volume.
Edgar Kennedy.
A true innovator and painful understanding of timing and build up.

These films are not just classics to archive but need a wider appreciation, if nothing more than to see just how far comedy came and then receded.

As for the purchase. Flawless and recommended highly.

Love Laurel and Hardy, love Edgar Kennedy. A very simple equation.

4.0 out of 5 stars The master of the slow burn 21 Aug 2013
By john watson bruce - Published on Amazon.com

Edgar Kennedy is finally getting the recognition due him. Originally one of the Keystone Cops, He was in The Little Rascals shorts and Laurel & Hardy's usually as Kennedy the Cop or a father in law with the gout whose bandaged foot is constantly and unintentionally being abused by Stan & Ollie or their dog. but these are public domain copies of his RKO short subjects which He Made over 100. These shorts were probably the spring board for tv sitcom's in the early days of tv till right now. I would give all 3 of the DVD's in this series 5 stars except a few of the shorts are a little grainy. All in All if you like classic comedy you will like these!

4.0 out of 5 stars Equal quality to the VCI release, and a better value. 14 Nov 2012
By Paul J. Mular - Published on Amazon.com

After perfecting his "Kennedy The Cop" character at Hal Roach Studios, Edgar Kennedy went on to do a series of sit-com like comedies over at RKO. While most of today's TV sitcoms got their roots in Radio, this series was one of the only ones to do it in theatrical shorts. Bill Cassara ponders in his Edgar Kennedy book Edgar Kennedy that the character in this series could quite possibly be looked at as Kennedy-the-cop at home, with a reaccuring cast of family members.

Being produced over at the low budget RKO studios, these often have the feel of a 1950's TV show, much like The Stu Erwin Show (not quite the caliber of I Love Lucy or The Honeymooners). Unfortunately this set is from a Public Domain DVD company who finds any 16mm prints or tape transfers to digitize for DVD production. They do not use original 35mm negatives to master from.

I compared this DVD release to the similar VCI Edgar Kennedy releaseEdgar Kennedy Two-Reeler Comedy Collection and found little difference between the two. In general the VCI picture quality was marginally better, but not a real restoration. When you realize you can get those 10 VCI titles PLUS 10 more titles from Alpha Video's two volumes Kennedy, Edgar - Rediscovered Comedies of Edgar Kennedy, Volume 1 for the same price it is a no brainer to get this volume 2 & their other volume 1.

Most of these are nice, some may be softer than others btu nothing to complain about. Until whoever owns the original negatives puts them out on DVD (unlikely in today's economy) this will appease our appetites. (Do a slow burn here.)

The titles in volume 2 (VCI = indicates a title duplicated on the VCI DVD set)
A Merchant of Menace (1933)
An Apple in His Eye (1941)
Baby Daze (1939) (VCI)
Feather Your Nest (1944) (VCI)
Hold Your Temper (1943) (VCI)
I'll Build it Myself (1946) (VCI)
I'll Fix It (1941)
Prunes and Politics (1944)
Rough on Rents (1942) (VCI)
Westward Ho-Hum (1941)

For some reason set #2 is not in chronological order.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another Case of "what's on this disc" 25 Jun 2010
By MARK C. BALE - Published on Amazon.com
As I key this it is 5 days before the planned release date. Still no info as to the contents. I have even contacted Alpha (oldies.com) about this who said their site will be updated with info when available. Surely they must know the contents 5 days before street date ????

Volume 1 I have which I haven't viewed yet but looks very interesting. I hope that more of Edgar's RKO shorts will be released in further volumes. Most of them were shown on the BBC in the early 80s together with most of the Leon Errol shorts, and other RKO shorts as early morning fillers. And so I hope that Leon Errol's shorts will also turn up together with his other starring RKO comedy films (Pop always pays, the "Mexican Spitfire" series, etc).
