Story:
School teacher is concerned about a pupil's behaviour and lack of parental concern, finds the child lives with his father, a double amputee, a widower who has withdrawn from life as his loss is too great to handle. Friendship ensues followed by what starts as a marriage of convenience.
Pros:
Good, strong characters. The oger with a soft centre and the school mistress who is settling to be a spinster.
Very good, and not annoying child character.
Smooth, natural pacing.
Absolutely love the era this is set in. Late 1800s early 1900s. Little House On The Prairy era.
Cons:
Way too much ordering around of people, every other page she is telling someone to do x or y and it is a bit dry and you kind of want to yell to the woman "do it you own self".
Not enough focus on the male lead, who is by far, the more interesting of the characters. He was in war, had a trauma, strong character but not unreasonable.
Not enough going on for it to be a novel length book. When you sit back after reading it you think to yourself, what actually happened and the answer would be "not a lot".
Would not rush out a buy another Carolyn Davidson book. Need more meat on the bones.
