3.0 out of 5 stars Not a revolutionary tale 14 Nov 2005
By Sam
Format:Paperback
'Redcoat' is an example of Cornwell's earlier work, it being one of the first non-Sharpe titles he wrote since that series began. Since the late 80s he has gone on to prove that he can write more than just one character - for instance the King Arthur trilogy he wrote was particularly excellent.

This book is set during the American War of Independence and follows a series of characters as they react to the English occupation of the US capital Philadelphia. From the view of an officer, private and rebel a story unfolds of war, treachery and love - the usual Cornwell combination then!

This book does not show Cornwell's best as the story is just not stong enough. It is very reminiscent of other books he has written. Normally this does not matter as the characters are fleshed out so well but in this case it does as you end up feeling little sympathy for anyone. The pacing of the book is a bit off and not that much seems to happen. Although not the best Cornwell book I have read worse historic fiction - I think it could put a first time Cornwell reader off looking at other of his titles so I suggest sticking to Sharpe or the King Arthur trilogy first.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Cornwells best 28 Sep 2000
Format:Paperback
This book is set during the American Revolution and during the Battle of Germantown and the British occupation of Philadelphia. The charachters are well fleshed out and of course Cornwell excells in the battle scenes but I found the ending dissapionting (It was if you will excuse the pun a bit of an American ending) E.G Christopher Vane who was interesting charachter and Cornwell could have done a series on him set during the American war ended up as a ruthless villian determined to win with the view that end justifies the means. A bit of a waste in my opinion but there you go. His other main charahcter the hero Sam Gilpin I found very hard to like and sympathise and with and who jsut struck me as some dumb country bumpkin. Unlike Sharpe,Derfel and Starbuck his other characters from different books. Some bits of the story were good though showing the effects of faimly riven by civil war and the tradgedy of what would happen to them. Overall an enjoyable book but certainly a far cry from Cornwells best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Redcoat by Bernard Cornwell 16 July 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having read many of Bernards books I ordered this one through Amazon not being able to find it locally.
It was delivered with the usual excellent service and did'nt disappoint.
Concerning the American War of Independence it revolves around the torn loyalties on both sides and impresses both with Cornwell's usual excellently researched blending of fact and fiction and plenty of action.
I've never been too keen on his Sharp sagas as they tend to be too incredible for me, but he certainly hits the spot with this and his saxon v viking novels.

3.0 out of 5 stars At the lower end of a high standard 1 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Bernard Cornwell must be incredibly dedicated to write fiction at the pace and in the quantity he does, considering the research involved and the high standard he maintains. However, this novel seems to be somethiing he has produced at a pace consistent with him while possibly being rather unfresh. If you're familiar with Cornwell then nothing will be surprising by mid way through this book. As usual he develops characters to a humanly recognizable level so that we all realise we are all the same anbd war is a terrible futility, but this pales before the warlord trilogy. For Cornwell, very average, but in the wider context, very good indeed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Cornwells best! 11 Feb 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The book features an english redcoats adventures in North America during the war of independence. Very much Cornwell by numbers and lacks the charm of the Sharpe/Starbuck and especially the Warlord saga - ok but you will not rush to reread it!

Another of Cornwell’s books that evokes an image of the time.

Very interesting, very enjoyable and well worth the read. Cornwell captures a certain realism and weaves fact with fiction in a perfect manner.

The characters seem to come to life and portray the times in such a way that you either want to be there or are glad you were born in this century not theirs.

A long with The FORT, this is a detailed and interesting read, one I would recommend if you enjoy the colonial wars or the 18th century…
