Review
Oswald T. Campbell is 52 years old and very ill. Given only a few months to live he is told he must head south, like a migrating bird, or the savage Chicago winter will kill him. With nothing to keep him in the city, Oswald soon finds himself in the picturesque and mild-wintered small town of Lost River, Alabama, where he is welcomed with open arms by the residents. He soon makes firm friends with Frances, a widow determined to fix Oswald up with her sister, and Roy, the local store owner who keeps a feisty red cardinal bird named Jack as a pet, much to the amusement of the locals. As the months pass Oswald falls into the Lost River way of life until one day an enchanting young girl called Patsy starts appearing at the store to see Jack the red bird and slowly changes Oswald's life and those of the Lost River residents for ever in the most heart-warming ways possible. This is feel-good storytelling at its best and will no doubt charm all who read it this Christmas. (Kirkus UK)

Fannie Flagg turns her magical story-telling talent to a short and poignant Christmas story for all the family. Oswald T. Campbell, aged 52, down-and-out in a Chicago winter, is given only months to live unless he moves South...He finds himself in the small-town of Lost River, Alabama, where the residents are friendly if feud-prone and eccentric to a fault. One of them, Roy, keeps a red cardinal, a once wounded bird called Jack, in the village store. Patsy, a sad, sweet little kid with a crippled leg, from the trailer park up in the woods, takes to dropping by the store - and falls in love with Jack. Flagg takes us on an emotional roller-coaster ride through the lives and hearts of an engaging crew of misfits, fixers and ordinary good-hearted folk, set against the vivid natural backdrop of a mellow Alabama winter, along the riverside where birds and fish abound. The enchanting story culminates at Christmastide with miracles and a magical 'redbird' moment.
