Product Description

Product Description
Oswald T. Campbell, aged fifty-two, down-and-out in a Chicago winter, is given only months to live unless he moves South. He finds himself in the small town of Lost River, Alabama, where the residents are friendly if feud-prone and eccentric to a fault. One of them, Roy, keeps a red cardinal, a once wounded bird called Jack, in the village store. Patsy, a sad, sweet little kid with a crippled leg, from the trailer park up in the woods, takes to dropping by the store - and falls in love with Jack. Flagg takes us on an emotional roller-coaster ride through the lives and hearts of an engaging crew of misfits, fixers and ordinary good-hearted folk, set against the vivid natural backdrop of a mellow Alabama winter, along the riverside where birds and fish abound. Her enchanting story culminates at Christmas time with surprises and a magical 'redbird' moment.

From the Publisher
An irresistible tale of enchantment and miracles at Christmas, with the classic heartbreaking appeal of Paul Gallico's The Snow Goose and all of Fannie Flagg's inimitable charm and humour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting Christmas tale, 22 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: A Redbird Christmas (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book to curl up & read, especially when it is cold & rainy outside. Make yourself a hot chocolate, snuggle up and lose yourself in the residents of Lost River who are all eccentric, caring & full of kindness.

The Guardian review did make much of the 'sappy tale', but it did also (rightly) say that despite the plot synopsis it is never overly sentimental. This is in the same style of Fannie Flaggs other books, so if you like those, you are also sure to like this.

In summary, this is a great book to read in the week before Christmas...

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Wonderful!, 9 Dec 2005

What a wonderful book to curl up with during the christmas period; heartwarming, kind and a pure breath of fresh air. Just what I needed to escape during the christmas period.

There's not much more I can say, it's so sweet and simple and just lovely and a welcome relief from the real world.

Settle down with a glass of mulled wine and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than "Fried Green Tomatoes"!, 1 Mar 2005
By Geoffrey Woollard (Cambridgeshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Redbird Christmas (Hardcover)
Since I first watched "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" as a movie on TV (I later bought the book and the DVD from Amazon!) and became appreciative of Fannie Flagg's other wonderful works, I was convinced that nothing could surpass that amusing and exciting story of long-lost times in 'The South.' It was always evident that the author was in love with that region of the United States and her descriptive passages may be relied upon to evoke the very special atmosphere and feelings of 'small-town' Southern locations and their inhabitants. Her latest offering - "A Redbird Christmas" - is in the same vein, but also very different, in that, whilst mainly again set in 'The South,' it is a delightfully charming and moving tale that falls firmly into the 'couldn't put it down' category. It is a short book (only 207 pages) and I read it in one long evening, but I just loved it for its portrayal of the very best of human nature and for its restoring of faith in fundamental decency. The characters are not 'larger than life': they are all too real and with many inherent human faults, but their qualities and the exceptional writing shine in a manner that leaves the reader happy and joyful. "A Redbird Christmas" is well up there with Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol" and would be a steal at double the price: I cannot wait for more triumphant tomes from Fannie Flagg!
