Product Description

CD Description

Two years after their self-titled EP, the Toronto-based indie rock trio known as Born Ruffians presents 11 quirky tracks on their full-length debut, RED, YELLOW AND BLUE. On the title song, frontman Luke LaLonde lays lofty vocals over a serenely minimalist track (built on guitar plucks and background whistling), crooning about founding his own nation and pontificating on the colors of said nation's flag. From there, the band moves from jangly guitar-driven euphoria ("Barnacle Goose" and "Hummingbird") to starry-eyed neo-folk ("LittleGarcon") and drumless dirges ("Red Elephant").

5.0 out of 5 stars kicking licks and adicitve indie pop..., 15 Jul 2008
By Mr. S. K. Balkham "lexgood" (uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I stumbled across this band by complete accident, just browsing the recommendations on Amazon. Bought it on a whim and have since been extolling its virtues to anyone who'll let me rant about it long enough. Great vocal harmonies, catchy riffs that will have you humming and skipping along the street and inventive melodies that put them a couple of rungs above most of the bands in the same genre that are out there at the moment. As well as the obligatory `one off the phone add' there are some stand out songs on here - particularly Badonkadonky and Little Garcon, with their rough guitar energy and beautiful vocals respectively, but the album is a complete package. No fillers here.

I'm rarely compelled to write reviews on here, as there are normally plenty of people who have said what needs to be said already, but these guys are special enough to get a bit of a preacher on... Can't recommend highly enough and itching to see them live now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly skewed indie , 11 Jul 2008
By eighteighteight (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
I first heard these guys on Skins but it wasn't until I heard Hummingbird on Radio 1 that I bothered to pick this up, now I'm kicking myself for waiting so long - Red Yellow and Blue takes beautiful, simple indie pop songs and twists them savagely into short, sharp, sublime cuts of frantic melody. For anyone that thought Hummingbird was a fluke, listen to Little Garcon, Badonkadonkey and Kurt Vonnegut. Youthful, distinctive and totally vital.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just buy to try, 27 May 2009
With all the music available to us today it's nice to find a band with their own identity. These guys make songs you wanna listen to.
Very reminisent of The Violent Femme's, and that could never be a bad thing.
