Book Description

5 Jun 2008

To most thirty-something women, walking across the street to get a skinny latte and the latest copy of heat in excrutiating high heels is an all-terrain task in itself. But Lois Pryce isn't just any woman - nine to five and post-work white wine spritzers have never been her thing. Unafraid of a challenge - having already ridden her motorbike from Alaska to the southernmost tip of South America - she decided she could never be one to settle for a last minute package holiday in Viva Espana. So, she began the kind of adventure most of us could only ever dream of.

Donning her sparkly crash helmet and armed with her trusty maps and a baffling array of visas, Lois got on her bike once more to make an impressive international journey. Alone. No support vehicles, no fancy GPS and no satellite phone

Leaving from London, finishing in Cape Town - and the small matter of tackling the Sahara, war-torn Angola and the Congo Basin along the way - this feisty independent woman's grand trek through the Dark Continent of Africa is the definitive motorcycling adventure.

It was certainly never going to be easy but, equipped with a formidable strength of character and an immense passion for life, Lois Pryce's astonishing achievement is an inspiration to us all. She paints a vivid picture of travelling through the vast African landscape. Colourful and hilarious, Red Tape and White Knuckles is an action-packed tale about following your dreams that will have you packing your bags and jetting off into the sunset on your own adventure before you know it. .

Review

A natural storyteller, she brings the African landscape to life in this funny, fast-paced travelogue. (Sainsbury's Magazine )

Reads like a non-fiction chick-lit adventure as the pasty-skinned, heatstroke-prone Pryce deals with cultural differences, Africa's troublesome roads and the company of various travellers she meets along the way. (Metro )

Every chapter is filled with adventure and anecdotes about the people an situations that she encounters along the way. It's a mix of hairraising incidents, humorous episodes and serious insight into the history and cultural differences that she esperiences across the African continent. A travelogue with a difference. Great for the armchair adventurer, someone planning an African expedition or anyone who simply enjoys a good story (Candis )

A gutsy tale of one woman and her bike, told with vigour and honesty. Enjoyable. (Irish Times )

Praise for Lois on the Loose:

'Lois makes merry work of a rough road. She knows how to tell a good story, and her light-hearted account almost disguises the grit, the resilience and the brave independence that lay behind her choices. It's a great read, and I hope there will be more. ' Ted Simon, author of Jupiter's Travels

'The narrative roars along at a breakneck pace, and is full of funny asides and snappy accounts' Sunday Telegraph

5.0 out of 5 stars Lois strikes again 6 Jun 2008
By Pmc
Format:Paperback
Well some time ago I read and thoroughly enjoyed "Lois On The Loose" and have had
"Red Tape & White Knuckles" pre ordered for some time.
Mr Amazon honoured his Promise and as It dropped through my door on the 4th of June
I thought at least that is one really good read to take with me next week on holiday.
..
BUT.. I made the mistake of reading the prologue ..... Then finished the book on Thursday night.!!
I must say I really REALLY enjoyed it, Even More Than "Lois On The Loose"
I take my hat.. and coat and shoes off to This young lady, She is certainly one Mad, Guttsy and Brave lass to tackle such a journey.
She also posses that rare talent as a writer, That once lifted and commenced The Book is so damn hard to put down..
A Really Excellent adventure and extremely well told, The reader is almost there riding alongside with her.
A Highly recommended read

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ride, great read 18 July 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Half way through this book I had the slightly surreal experience of actually meeting Lois (she of the sparkly crash helmet & sheepskin saddle) by accident on the M3 as she was riding to Spain for her next adventure with husband Austin Vince (of Mondo Enduro fame). I was able to whip the book out of my tank bag for an impromtu book signing. She was on the bike that made the trip from London to Cape town and she proudly proclaimed still on the same chain and sprokets. But what of the book?Well, even before I met Lois I thought it a superb read having devoured it to the 1/2 way point in one evening. She has an honest, self depricating style that completly captures the essence of the journey without taking herself too seriously in light of all the obvious poverty throughout Africa. Makes The Long Way Down look like an embarrassing, self-obsessed lovee in for complete wozzies. Cheap bike, minimal kit and a proper mental attitude -it's an adventure, so enjoy it for what it is and she does. Putting it down I felt I'd riden the whole way with her. Highly recomended as an antidote to the stale, nanny state, H&S concious world we live in. Can't wait for the next one. Recommended for motorcyclists and non-motorcyclists alike it is a very whitty non-pretentious tale.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lois does it again 1 April 2009
Format:Paperback
Here is her second travel book. In her first she escapes a boring job at the BBC (I find it hard to imagine a boring job at the BBC - I tend to think they must all live endlessly fascinating lives... anyway) to ride her motorcycle from the tip of Alaska all the way to the southern tip of South America.

Here she rides from England all the way to the southern tip of Africa.

Her style is chatty and engaging, but I do find she tends to team up with others on the trip which seems to take some of the adventure out of it. rather than being a solo female ride it becomes a series of jaunts with others. In fairness, on this trip she does spend long sections alone too and in fact on one of these has the scariest and truly liffe threatening encounters which all solo travelers must fear. She copes with it superbly and comes off unharmed. So she must be given full credit for her endeavor and bravery. I also like her faith in human nature and positive outlook despite adversity. But compared to many travel accounts hers do seem a bit less arduous in places, a bit tame. That may be a reflection on the fact that even places like Africa are gradually getting better roads and the remote places are no longer so remote.

So this is a light read, and I enjoyed it. I will continue to buy her books - she hints at another at the end of this one. But do expect some sections to be rather mundane as she travels with a cross country rally team and then follows some people in Landrover and so on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Courage
It is not only a question of courage, is what has to be done to get to the target which is not the final destination. The trip and its circumstances, the unknown is the challenge.
