5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating eclectic collection 16 Dec 2004
Format:Paperback
This is a fascinating collection of short stories which gives an intriguing insight into, among other things, the rituals of Jewish family life. They range from the amusing, poignant and sometimes harrowing, each with a thought-provoking outcome. Her vivid , refreshing, original style ensures that the tales stay in the memory long after the book has been read. For me - her descriptions of food (and baking in particular), are without equal. Once I started reading, I had to keep on going until I reached the end - and then wanted more. Ruth Joseph grabs your attention immediately with her warm, understated style. There has to be a novel there somewhere - and in the meantime, 'Red Stilettos' is guaranteed to be a tantalising appetiser.

Although each story is memorable - her depiction of impending 'Grandmotherhood' in 'Grandmother to a heart beat' has to be one of the most moving and real descriptions I have ever read. I look forward to hearing more from this new author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deeply-felt short stories 19 Oct 2008
By Charles D. Klingman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
These stories, some of which feature the little-known Welsh Jewish community, are well-written and provide an insight into the lives of their characters. These short stories focus on the emotional lives of the characters, and on insights that they achieve within the span of the story. Each story stands on its own merit, and provides an American reader with many common and familiar topics, such as achieving balance between work and family, or between the needs of the protagonist, and the demands of family. However, these stories do also provide an insight into urban Welsh life, and in some cases into the lives of those within the presumably small Jewish community in Wales. These stories merit a wider readership in the United States, and one hopes for further such stories from this author.
2.0 out of 5 stars Red Stilletos 17 Nov 2012

While some of the short stories were good, many were very ordinary with little point to them. Also, I didn't understand many of the Britishisms.
5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking stories of life and its special moments 30 Oct 2012
By Berkano - Published on Amazon.com

Although some of the stories center on the Welsh Jewish community, I think the essence of each story applies to every one of us. The writer explores the delicate balance between Self and Situation - often with a finely-tuned sensitivity that is heartbreaking in its simplicity. Each story is a separate jewel that sparkles with dark and light.
