Biography

by William Ruhlmann

Throughout a professional career lasting 50 years, Miles Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective, and melodic style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. But if his approach to his instrument was constant, his approach to jazz was dazzlingly protean. To examine his career is to examine the history of jazz ... Read more in Amazon's Miles Davis Store

Along with "Trocadero" which was released in 1976 (and re-issued on CD earlier this year), "Red Star" is the band at their peak.
This superbly varied album (their 4th studio LP in 4 years!) contains many of their finest songs such as "In Above Your Head" and "Swansong", as well as massive Top 5 hits such as "You Got What It Takes", "When", and "Dancin' Party". The orchestral arrangements are excellent, along with pedal steel from BJ Cole, and brass on most of the songs.
Al James (bass guitarist, occasional songwriter, and sometime lead singer) provides his best song to date ("Feelin") which really rocks - and what a bonus to have another 3 A-Sides (again, all Top 5 hits) included, along with all the relevant B-Sides as well!
I've never really understood why their best 2 albums performed relatively badly in the charts (Red Star reached Number 20 in 1977) - but now's the time to re-evaluate this gem...it's a snip at this price!!
Their next LP, 1979's "Crepes & Drapes" will be released in early 2003 according to the label Cherry Red / 7T's, and is also a cracker!! And by the way, 2003 is the band's 30th Anniversary - this is a great way to celebrate!

As another reviewer has mentioned, Red Star (originally released on 11th November 1977, in the year of punk) was Showaddywaddy at their peak.

At this time, the band were in the middle of their run of consecutive top 10 hit singles, but rather surprisingly the album only got to number 20. It still attained "Gold" status though!

The original release contained the singles, "When", "You Got What It Takes", and "Dancin' Party" which were all top 5 hits in 1977, and the CD reissue contains further singles "A Little Bit of Soap", "I Wonder Why" and "Pretty Little Angel Eyes", which were all also top-5 hits in 1978, and which makes this much like a greatest hits album than a standard LP!

The album tracks here are just as strong, and the original '77 LP featured seven self-penned songs and six cover versions, further proving that Showaddywaddy were much more than just a covers band.

The reissue contains a whopping 21 tracks and is well worth a purchase, and easily gets a 5 star rating.

When I first heard this in the 70's, it wasn't to my taste (I was born in 1961) but as I have got older, my taste has mellowed somewhat. My sister still has the album on cassette!
