Product Description

TAUGHT TO STALK. TRAINED TO KILL. PROGRAMMED TO DESTROY.

Dolph Lundgren is Nikolai - a killing machine - a deadly, highly skilled agent for the Russian army whose brutal efficiency and single minded determination to serve the motherland leaves behind a trail of battered bodies and bloodied enemies.

Now Nikolai must infiltrate an African rebel army who seek to defy their new communist rulers and take out their leader, but as he gets to know his enemies and the dignified Bushmen he encounters, he begins to slowly realize that all he has been taught was a lie. This Cold War rebel is ready to turn the tables on his Soviet masters and kick all kinds of ass!

With a body count that leaves jaws firmly on the floor and a healthy disregard for troublesome logic, Red Scorpion is a classic 80s action spectacular that doesn t let up for a second...

The Guardian

Best label 2011

Arrow

"It's often the smaller-funded labels that do the best work. Arrow has released marvellous discs of many of cinema's classics, such as Bicycle Thieves, Rififi and Les Diaboliques, but it's for their horror releases that they truly excel. The more respectable directors like George A Romero and Dario Argento get their due here, but Arrow also pull out all the stops for such (unfairly) lesser regarded Gore-teurs as Lucio Fulci and Frank Henenlotter. Blu-rays of Fulci classics The Beyond and City Of The Living Dead show that the films are far more atmospheric and better made than they ever appeared before, and for Henenlotter (with the imminent Frankenhooker disc) you get extensive extras that cover the rarely examined scene of low-budget New York film-makers and the lost grindhouses of Times Square and 42nd Street."

4.0 out of 5 stars An action-packed adventure! 9 Mar 2002
Format:DVD
Dolph Lundgren is on top form in this film as Lt. Nikolai Rachenko, a Soviet Special Forces agent sent to Africa to assassinate a rebel leader. As the film progresses and he witnesses unnecessary brutality towards the natives, he begins to sympathize with the rebel cause and question his loyalty to their oppressors, which allows for interesting character development.

T.P. McKenna is also good as General Vortek, Nikolai's cold-hearted commander (though his accent wavers from time to time), and M. Emmet Walsh provides great comic relief as Dewey, an American journalist who is forced to reconsider his view of Russians as merciless killing machines as he gets to know Nikolai.

All in all this is a very entertaining film, with never a dull moment and a touch of humour, that will keep viewers riveted until its action-packed conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars "..TOP 80'S ACTION.." 28 April 2012
Format:Blu-ray
This is Dolph Lundgrens commando, a truly now cult classic action movie from the awesome 80s, theres plenty of action, explosions and shootouts and Dolph flexing his muscles! Arrow films have done a good job of transferring it as it looks great, you get the usual cool new artwork on the cover and free poster etc and some cool features, if you love the 80s then this is a must.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but there is better on the way 21 Feb 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really applaud Arrow for adding this great 80's action movie to their catalogue of more cult and horror oriented releases.

As with all their delux Blu-Ray presentations, it is attractively packaged, and comes with a nice quality double sided poster, and 4 regional variant options of sleeve design.

The small booklet is informative, though maybe padded out with information about the director's previous work, as opposed to a lot of info specific to the production of the film itself.

The print of the film is OK, but not great - there are still some places in which the quality becomes grainy, particularly in night scenes where the imperfections stand out against the darkness.

This is the complete and uncut version of the movie.

Extra's include a standard director's commentary, a somewhat pointless intro from Dolph, a brief interview with him, and a feature on the film score.

Unfortunately, as attractive as all this is to fans of the film, it is Arrows bad luck, that very shortly, Synapse Films will be releasing their own collectors blu-ray of this film, that will have a digitally remastered and restored print, a 5:1 DTS audio option, along with a far more impressive collection of extras, including more comprehensive interviews, and unseen footage from behind the scenes, shot by FX maestro Tom Savini himself. It will also be a Region free release.

So its not that this version is 'bad', its just that a better edition is on the horizon.
