Product Description

Album Description

Brian Kennedy is one of Ireland's most successful ambassadors of music. He is not only a prolific songwriter but also a master interpreter of lyrics and audiences around the world continue to praise his exceptional vocal talent. Red Sails in the Sunset features seventeen tracks including many songs that featured in the second, highly successful BBC Northern Ireland TV series, On Song, Red Sails in the Sunset is a typically eclectic and marvellously entertaining collection. Stylistically varied it may be, but Brian's usual high quality standard remains a constant. The album features Brian in duet with several guest vocalists – namely Juliet Turner, Ralph McTell, Liam Clancy, Lulu, Moya Brennan, Eddi Reader and, in possibly the most inspired pairing of all, former WBA Featherweight boxing champion, Barry McGuigan. The contrasting timbres of the guest vocalists allows Brian Kennedy to match his considerable voice with his guests in a way that allows both parties to shine – and the results are spellbinding. Whether it is songs of displacement and yearning, such as the Ralph McTell opus, "Clare To Here", or the rambunctious, carousing and breezily good-time romp of "Irish Rover" (with Liam Clancy) Brian is in his element, his creativity given full free rein. The album's opener (and also the debut single) "The Island", penned by one of Kennedy's great Irish singer/songwriter contemporaries, Paul Brady, is a duet with Juliet Turner and the two conspire to produce a performance of awesome emotional appeal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ah it's going to be brilliant - giving it 10 stars now, 15 Feb 2005

Oh hurry up and release this please! Saw Brian singing "When You Were Sweet 16" recently on the Irish chat show "The Late Late Show" and it was fantastic - so if that was good, this is going to be good!! Have faith in the man, he's one of the best Irish performers; distinctive voice that sets him apart from all the rest and his song choice on this album is terrific. And believe it or not, Barry McGuigan is a nice little singer!! Final words HURRY UP AND RELEASE THE ALBUM!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Man With The Golden Voice, 20 Aug 2005
By Lynell A. Franklin - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Red Sails in the Sunset: On Song 2 (Audio CD)
You've probably never heard of Brian Kennedy, or perhaps you have. The first time I heard Brian sing was with Van Morrison on tour. I was blown away, while some of the rude Pantages audiance was booing Brian because he was singing Van's song, SOLO, without Van. I remember feeling horrible for him, but he seemed not to be fazed. By the end of the evening I do believe there was a greater appreciation not only for Brian, but everyone else that took the spotlight (Georgie Fame, Candy Dufler). Brian was so ehteral and beautiful. I had been to Ireland and took a great interest in the music that came from that small patch of land. I tracked his music down, usually on-line at a UK contact.

I have much of his music, but I will say Red Sails In The Sunset may be his best, but it really is right there with On Song, the precurser to this CD. He does several duets. He has a real talent for choosing just the right voice for each song. And if you're old enough to remember Lulu, she is wonderful on Peggy Gordon.

If you really want to see Brian do his thing, "Brian Kennedy Live in Belfast" is the closest you may get. It's a wonderful performance in his home town with what seems to be all his friends and family. He does many of the songs from On Song.

I can't see how you could be disappointed with this CD if you have any interest in beautiful voices and steller songs to show case them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album from an Underrated artist, 18 May 2006
By Paul A. Kirwan - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Red Sails in the Sunset: On Song 2 (Audio CD)
Brian Kennedy is a most-underrated singer-songwriter from Ireland. This album is the soundtrack to a TV series that he did in Ireland which links songs to certain areas of Ireland. Songs like 'Sweet Sixteen', 'From Clare to Here', 'Peggy Gordon' and 'The Island' are all polished masterpieces. This is not just for Irish-Folk music lovers as there is something here for everyone. Those lucky enough to 'discover' Brian know what I am talking about when I say that he has the voice of an angel and delivers a song like he was singing directly to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars On Song 2, Red Sails in the Sunset, 25 Feb 2009

I am throughly enjoying this CD. I worked in an Irish Pub and miss the live music and this provides an oppotunity to expand my Irish music collection.

The service I received was very prompt and efficient.
