This novella really is short. I know it's a short story, but I've read quite a few novellas and this really is very little and seems more like half a chapter!

Equally the story really never gets exciting. I love novellas which have a twist, or an interesting character or something that makes me want to read more. This one didn't do those things for me. This is effectively a ghost story, the kind you're told over a campfire to freak you out, but with less of the creepiness of a really good one.

Edie is driving along a road, Red Run, searching for the ghost who killed her brother. And six others. Her interactions with the ghost are fairly exciting. I wanted to know why the ghost was killing, how the ghost himself was killed and how she planned to kill a dead guy! So that was a great hook. Unfortunately the ending was a little flat and, had this been a full length story, I'd have put it down.

Nevertheless, this is a nice teaser for those that like paranormal stories. It works better as part of the anthology it also resides in, Enthralled:Paranormal Diversions. I hope that people will still take a look at this authors other work, as this probably isn't her finest and would most likely have put me off if it had been my first Garcia book.

It started out pretty well but I think I was expecting a bit more... it ended rather abruptly - I guess I forgot it was a short story cos I'd just settled down for a good read& it was over in 20 mins!

i thought this was a great story however it could have had a lot more going on, it's quite a simple, predictable ghost story

I had never heard of this author until my daughter asked for one of her novels for Christmas. I enjoyed this short story so much that I ordered a second copy of that novel -- Beautiful Creatures. :-)

HASH(0x8f1ca930) out of 5 stars Good but not great -- and also published elsewhere 1 Feb. 2014

I'm kind of hoping that this short story is secretly a preview for a new series, because as a stand-alone it's good but not great. It's well-written, sure, and makes me want to see what happens to the characters next, but - how do I put this? - it's not remotely as original as it thinks it is. Taking the "ghost passenger" urban legend and trying to add a fresh spin is all well and good and this story does it as well as any, I suppose. Eh. (Other reviewers have compared it to a particular episode of Supernatural, and that's apt for me, as well.) Also, it wasn't as atmospheric as I'd anticipated, and could have taken place in Anytown, USA. There was nothing really to tie it to its supposed Bayou location.

This next bit doesn't color my review, but I feel the need to mention the fact that I bought this on Amazon - for my Kindle - and nowhere on the Amazon listing is it indicated that the story was previously published in the collection "Enthralled: Paranormal Diversions" - a collection which I purchased in hardcover upon its original 2011 publication, but had not yet read. I just happened to pull it off the shelf immediately after reading "Red Run", while looking for more short stories, only to roll my eyes at the ToC when, lo and behold, I saw "Red Run" there.

So basically, I paid for this so-so story twice. It's not like I paid a lot, but I feel kind of PO'd that the Amazon listing trades on the impression that it's an e-Exclusive. I'm very happy to have this story in Enthralled; it actually sits more comfortably in that context than it does as a Kindle Single.

Red Run is a nice modern take on the white lady ghost story with a twist ending that leaves it open for future stories. I liked the southern setting and the female lead. It was short but satisfying.
