Product Description

What began as Bull Tales in the Yale Daily News in 1968 became Doonesbury when it debuted as a Universal Press Syndicate feature in 1970. The strip followed the lives of college roommates B.D. and Mike Doonesbury from their first encounter through the intricate life turns they experience, along with the cadre of eccentric and engaging characters they encounter over the next forty years. Always political, relentlessly pointed, expertly drawn and written, Doonesbury is a classic in its own time.

Cartoonist Garry Trudeau has been writing his "Doonesbury" comic for 40 years or so. Whether the reader considers it a political cartoon or just a traditional one - in some papers it's on the editorial pages, while in others, it's with the mainstream comics - it's a uniquely "American" one. The cast is comprised of about 20 or so life-long characters - my favorites are "Duke" and "Honey" - as well as dozens of people who come and go, depending on the plots of the strips. Recently Donald Trump has been heavily featured - and heavily lampooned - in the "Doonesbury" strips.

This latest book, "Red Rascal's War" is not a book of new material. Rather, it is a compilation of "Doonesbury" strips from the last year or so. Most people buying and reading this book will probably have read these strips before, but seeing them in one setting - in one book - makes them much more humorous and edgy than when viewed on a daily basis. And though Jeff Redfern, aka "The Red Rascal" - is the lead character in the book, all the other favorites of the past year are there, as well. Who can forget Daisy Doonesbury shuffling off her mortal coil and the raucous funeral that followed? Or Alex and her relationship with Leo? Always doubting herself but always being loved in return. Those are just a few of the stories in the book, and it's wonderful to sit and page through the past year with a now more appreciative eye.

Garry Trudeau and his work is not for everyone. But for those who love political satire mixed with everyday relationships, and helped along with a healthy dose of love, his comics are a true joy.

Doonesbury has never been better, and it has always been great. And now in color.
I'm in awe of Trudeau, that he can keep up this quality for 40 years.
The characters are still aging in real timing, maturing and changing, unlike any other strip I can think of. And the young characters who we have followed since birth are great characters in their own right.

By the way, the Kindle version is great, high resolution and in color! This is the first Kindle version of a strip which has really pleased me.

Bought this as a Christmas present for my Dad. He's been reading Doonsbury for years and years - loves them! The book is quite big, but was really good quality and my dad was really happy with it.
