Book Description

19 Aug 2010
This is the gripping true story of a young bomb disposal officer and his terrifying experiences in Iraq facing daily rocket attacks and terrorist bombs. When two of his colleagues are killed by a roadside bomb, Kevin Ivison is called in to defuse a second even deadlier bomb just a hundred yards from the bodies of his friends. To make things worse, the entire area is under fire from snipers, and a crowd of angry Iraqis have begun to hurl petrol bombs... With little chance of living through this impossible task, Kevin leaves final messages for his loved ones and sets out alone towards the bomb that he is sure will be the last thing he sees. In this gut-wrenching tale of heroism and survival, Kevin Ivison explains why he chose to be a bomb disposal expert in the first place, how he found the courage to face his death, and the unendurable stress that has given him nightmares ever since.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brave Man 11 Oct 2010
By Micky
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I saw this ex bomb disposal officer giving an interview on TV and was really impressed with how ordinary he came across. Thought I must read his book. Talk about disappointed, disappointed with our government who sent them there, disappointed with the outdated equipment they had to use disappointed with the way he was treated after risking his life.
I feel ashamed after reading his words that we dare to ask our armed forces to take the risks they do and we are not providing them with very best support we can.
This is one brave man, read it you won't be disappointed

An excellent book detailing the story of the bravest of the brave. Very well written detailing the dangers of soldiering in Iraq. The book also details the author's struggle to readjust to civilian life, I am sure with his unbreakable spirit that he will be able to live a happy and fullfiling life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book 19 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bought the book on strength of radio review and was not dissapointed. Very good book, easy to read and very informative about what the troops have to put up with on a daily basis. With the word 'hero' banded about so easily these days this read brings to you what heroism is really about. Whether you agree with reasons of why we went into this conflict you should read this book to hear what our boys and girls are expieriencing in the name of our democracy.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing read , you won't want to put it down 4 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book caught my attention from a review in a paper and did not dissapoint. It's a great read. It tells the whole story from wanting to be a soldier at a young age to the hard work qualifying as a bomb disposal expert and then to the stage where after he thinks he is not going to beat one bomb, he goes into meltdown. It's such a revealing account of post Traumatic Stress Disorder but in a way that doesn't depress, but made me think 'good grief, is that what it's like?' To the end where he can think of himself as one of the lucky ones. It's a truly remarkable book and I wish Kevin Ivison all the best in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely gripping read 14 Sep 2010
Format:Hardcover
What an absolutely fantastic read, a gripping, gut-wrenching true account of what life is really like on the front line and how much the work of Combat Stress and Help for Heroes can help our Heroes when they return home. I went through every emotion possible reading this book and could not put it down. I would highly recommend this book, especially for those looking to join the Military.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the light-hearted... 30 April 2011
By Graham
Format:Hardcover
An amazing window into the life of an ATO in Iraq during a tough tour. It is extremely touching in places, and you truly feel as though you could be experiencing the same issues that Kevin, El Capitino, is going through.
This isn't just another Iraq/Afghan war book, instead it's a gripping story from a man's need for adventure and his struggle to keep a grip on his sanity as he battles PTSD. I real eye-opener into the world of War and PTSD. Extremely touching.
A must read.

4.0 out of 5 stars One well-earned George Medal 15 Oct 2011
By I bite
Format:Paperback
I spend a lot of my time reading military fiction so when the real thing comes along it brings one down to earth with a bang. Too many literary heroes are cardboard cut-outs compared with real soldiers. The American authors particularly have a tendency to make their characters into supermen.
This book brings some absolute truths to warfare. It is filthy, extremely dangerous, inglorious and soul destroying. That's just for the Toms. Ammunition Technician Officers (ATOs) have a far tougher life.
Just how brave does a man have to be to go out convinced he will die, under gunfire to defuse a bomb that he knows nothing about? Inspired guesswork by Captain Kevin Ivison allowed him to approach a device from a direction where he would not trip the PIR that was set to trigger the bomb, past dead Paratroopers lying where a previous device had left them. That action, on top of continual rocket attack at his FOB drove him over the edge so that he became inoperative, suffering from PTSD.
That was a tragedy but the real suffering was to come later when doctor after doctor failed to help him and the army shrugged him off. It is a mark of the man that he fought back and found the help he needed. True bravery is often not in the face of the enemy where adrenaline plays it's part, but in coping with the aftermath of a traumatic experience with guts and determination.
This book should be required reading for any politician who sends our forces to war; and for any civilian who questions the skill, fortitude and determination of our young men and women caught up in a war brought about by those politicians.
From a technical point of view the book is well-written.
