Product Description

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER ON CD! The complete original trio album Red Norvo with Strings (Fantasy LP3-218, tracks 1-10), which appears here for the first time ever on CD. It features Norvo on vibes along with guitarist Tal Farlow and bassist Red Mitchell. Four more tunes recorded during the sessions and not included on the LP have been added as a bonus, as well as three 1952 tracks which complete all of the existing recordings by this formation of the Red Norvo Trio. Includes 12-page booklet Orginal Downbeat review of Red Norvo with Strings: One of the best of its intimate, conversational kind, this Norvo trio and its predecessors in the `50s were continuously intriguing in the flowing logic of their interplay and in the remarkably creative level of solo statements in the trialogue. A set of this clear quality needs no further verbal underscoring. Your time is better spent listening to it. Very well recorded."" ****1/2 stars (Nat Hentoff)

If you are a fan or jazz lover this is laid back, but tight. It's almost as though the trio is communicating by telepathy. They are obviously having fun, but are also serious about their music. I have always been a Norvo fan because of his light touch, and little or no vibrato on his vibraphone. Farlow's flowing guitar fits into the middle with Mitchell's bass keeping the pulse going.

This is a not all of Norvo's trio recordings, but is focused on his work with Tal Farlow on guitar and Red Mitchell on bass. As such this is a collection of the complete recordings of that group, including previously unissued tracks.

The first ten tracks are from the album titled Red Norvo With Strings that was recorded for the Fantasy label in Los Angeles on October 6 and 7, 1955. You can listen to sound samples for those tracks by following the link I provided. Tracks 11 through 14 are from the same session, but were not released. By the way, the only strings featured on that album are the six on Farlow's guitar and the four on Mitchell's bass.

Tracks 15 through 17 were recorded for Decca for the out-of-print album titled Dancing on the Ceiling. These were recorded in Los Angeles on July 1 and October 16, 1952. The reason the full album is not included is Tal Farlow is only on those tracks, and was replaced by guitarist Jim Raney on the remainder of that album.

While this is not the end all/be all of Norvo's trio recordings, it is an excellent cache of music from one of his tightest trios.

My favorite Red Norvo record is Hi-Five with the Red Norvo Quintet, which I started listening to when I was a kid many decades ago. I have a scratchy copy as a set of mp3 files created from vinyl. Regrettably I cannot find this in better audio quality. I see it on iTunes, but they won't let me buy it in America.

The present record called Red Norvo Trio comes closest to the spirit and quality of the Hi-Five record, though it's only a trio. I do miss the flute. If you like Red Norvo and the sound he created with his small ensembles, get this right away.

I think Red Norvo was a genius. Anybody agree or disagree? Brilliant technique and wonderfully imaginative. I don't get why he's not better known.
