The best comedy film I saw in 2011 (which says alot because Paul was DAMN GOOD)
I got to see it at the Terracotta Film Festival as part of #TheGeekShow, I'll keep it short on Amazon but the full review can be found on thegeekshow.co.uk

The story focuses on the trails and tribulations of Shunzi and Lili as they try to run their controversial business without any real idea of what they're getting into. The plot is compelling and fun, but the execution and charm are what elevates the film beyond its concept into something truly fantastic. Every opportunity is taken to parody and reference China's confusing legislation, from how to apply for a Sex Shop Permit, to the glaring gaze of the local `Neighbourhood Watchman'.

Red Light Revolution is one of those gems where everything works - from the funny and tasteful dialogue about sex, to the strong female lead who has no interest in the clichéd romantic back-seat, and the whole film makes an excellent statement about the nature of `Face' in China. The film delivers everything it promises and then some.

I'm trying to buy as many Mandarin-speaking films as possible, as I am learning the language. I found out about this film and bought it, hoping it would be tasteful and funny.
"Red Light Revolution" is a comedy about a man called Shunzi who wants to get rich quick (Not the newest concept, but wait...). He bumps into an old friend (now a successful business man) at his humiliating job selling weight-loss products with a glamorous girl. His friend convinces him the only way to make money fast and easy in modern China is by opening a sex shop! From his traditional parents to the local busy-body to crazy loan-sharks, you can never tell where the story is heading, or what the next obstacle will be for poor Shunzi, but the solutions are far more unpredictable than the problems!
I was expecting a lot more immature sex jokes, but actually it's nowhere near as dirty if it had been a Western film (which I'm quite happy with, to be honest!).
I wouldn't say it's for everyone, but if you like Chinese films, take a chance on this movie!

A portly cab driver Shunzi, with a self confessed big mouth gets the sack from his megalomaniac boss and by the time he gets home his wife throws him out and he gets to meet her new lover. He does get to keep the dog- so with mutt in tow he goes back to his elderly but sexually active parents.

A chance meeting with an old high school chum, who incidentally invented `the karaoke dild@' sees him being put in touch with Japanese entrepreneur and porn aficionado Iggy, who is allergic to his own sweat. With the lure of easy money - fast, he soon agrees to open a sex shop.

This is from Australian director Sam Voutas and it is a marvellous effort. The sex and sex toy industry has risen (forgive the pun) in China since free market thinking came in. This film melds the old ways with the new freedoms and the rising entrepreneurship of the Chinese people. This is a small budget film that does not let it show and it is full of laughs.

Shunzi is played with self deprecating brilliance by Jun Zhao who makes use of the above karaoke device mentioned earlier in the out play so worth watching for that. It is heart warming too in the way people pull together to help each other and it pokes fun at the established order as well as embracing the new ideas and ways of living and more importantly, loving.

It is an hour and a half but feels much shorter and is one of those you will get more from on subsequent viewings, a real little gem and it just goes to prove that size does not matter, I mean where a budget is concerned, you can still make a great film without spending a load of cash. Great if you like world cinema, China, sex or comedy or any combination of the above - highly recommended.
