I bought a copy of Red after reading a review by none other than Eric Cantona, the ex Manchester United captain. He said that Red was 'an excellent novel and a fine example of contemporary literature' and I entirely agree with him - although I'm not a Man Utd fan! Red is a dramatic novel following the fortunes of the Hayes family who run a town centre pub in the South of England. When their teenage son Ricky, a brilliant young footballer, is crippled in a drink drive accident the rest of the family are left devasted. Father Max vows revenge on the driver while eldest son Billy fights a losing battle against his own guilt. The storyline never loses pace and readers are kept guessing as to the very survival of the family to the very end. Once you pick Red up you won't be able to put it down - it's that good. Although it also received a good review in The Times newspaper not many people have apparently read it due, I understand to having only a small publisher - Minerva Press. The author is also adapting Red for a TV drama. Don't miss it!
