Joy Lies Within 23 Jan 2008
Format:Audio CD
Despite Red House Painters already having released a double album earlier in the year, Mark Kozelek's band capped off a remarkable year in 1993 with this second self-titled release.

The whole album is a hugely introspective affair, even by the standards already set by the band. `Evil' tells a story of a childhood misfit; this is followed by two defiantly inwardly-facing narratives in `Bubble' and `I Am a Rock'. Kozelek shows his gift for wringing new emotion and meaning from a cover version in the latter Paul Simon track, which sits very comfortably alongside his own song.

`Helicopter' and `Uncle Joe' are beautifully-paced, mostly acoustic songs - classic RHP. The record loses points in my opinion for the pointless beefed-up reworking of `New Jersey' from the earlier double album and the rather uninspiring, meandering `Blindfold', but this slightly frustrating inconsistency is what every Red House Painters fan, such as myself, must accept. It is a price worth paying for when this record is good it is very good indeed.

This is only the first CD I've bought of the Red House Painters. Though, I'd heard some of their stuff before (and liked it), I wouldn't say I'm completely familiar with their kind of music. But this album I would describe as very slow, laid back, folky, classic, alternative, rock music. Be warned some of the songs on this album are downright depressing but in a meaningful addictive way that keeps you listening. I must admit I didn't think much of the album the first time I heard it as I was flipping through the tracks looking for something that stood out. But that really isn't the way to listen to this album... you really need to listen through it for a while to get the whole feel for the songs (some of which are pretty long) and they sometimes do tend to change moods a few times through the course of it. Two tracks on the cd are very unique and interesting covers of the Star Spangled Banner and Simon and Garfunkel's "I am a Rock". From some of the stuff I've heard before, Mark Kozelec (the bands front man) seems to have a knack for coming up with completely unique covers of some great artists. My favourite tracks on this album however would have to be the rather disturbing "Evil" and the melancholy "Uncle Joe".

It was good enough to make me decide that I would definitely buy more of their CDs. Though I don't know if this should be recommended for first time listeners since some of the other stuff I've heard is probably better for getting used to their type of music (though I wouldn't necessarily say better as such).

Ok but you can kind of tell some of these are left-overs. 30 Jan 2006

This is RHP's second album released in 1993 and it was made up of songs that didn't go on the Rollercoaster (1st self titled)album. A few of these tracks are kind of weak, the re-recorded version of New Jersey and the 2 covers, which served as a warning for Kozalek's future cover's obsession. But Evil, Evil has got to be one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. It sounds like he's whispering the personal yet oddly poetic lyrics in your ear, this is much more than someone reading their diary over acoustic guitar. And the ending howls, its hard for me to listen to them they sound so painful. Also worthwhile is Helicopter, the guitar at the end is moody in just the right way, Uncle Joe and Blindfold. So, no, its not as good as rollercoaster but the high points are just as strong and if you are an RHP fan you should get this.
