Those people who regard "Backwards" any less highly than the miscellaneous Red Dwarf gems that abound or the other novels I have reviewed (Roman Blood; 101 Damnations; Ronan's Revenge; Ronan's Rescue, and Future Eden) than you are one pitiful person. "Backwards" was a rip-snorter, penultimately brilliant in every singular whimsical gag, and as thoroghly equal to those such as Douglas Adams, and indefinitely the superior item to "Last Human" which seems a controversy. There should be no bloody doubt, and it is incomprehensible why there would be--"Backwards" is radiant from the beginning (with the Cat *finally* scoring--to the conclusion--Ace Rimmer outshining even the most diligently good angel, and the Red Dwarf crew confronting the horrific agonoids...the ones that make you retch up your intestines. Literally. Great and classical.

But Grant and Naylor doing their seperate things just isn't right... the guys are a gestalt entity for Christ's sake. Their whole becomes much greater than the sum of their parts.
As with the other Dwarf books this is arguably better than the TV series, with all the characters fleshed out a lot more believably, and storylines briefly touched on in the shows are expanded into actuality.
This book IS funny, and this book DOES have a good story. It's just a shame the trilogy couldn't have ended the way it was meant to. With Doug Naylor sharing the typewriter.

A fantastic peice of science-fiction comedy that outshines Doug Naylor's "last Human" in every way. Very well written and has an intrigueing plot that, while it borrows its general situations from episodes from the series, does not spend its time rehashing the same plot twists and verbal interchanges. "last human" contained many conversations and jokes between characters that where merely carbon copies from the tv scripts, very lazy indeed. "Backwards", however, develops the basic ideas of several episodes and turns them into something new and wonderful. I have read this book at least five or six times since I first read it and i'm sure I will again. If you like Rob Grants humour then I would highly recommend his other book "incompetence". it is laugh out loud funny very very often. Great Book!

Just like the TV show: heading rapidly downhill
Backwards is beautifully written. It's also not funny. It successfully highlights Rob Grant's peculiar fascination with persecuting the characters he created, and does little else. Read more
