Book Description

18 Oct 2012
The First Law trilogy was Joe's take on the great epic fantasy tales. Then, in BEST SERVED COLD he took on a fantasy version of a classic revenge story, and we have a superb tale of war waged in the frozen north still to come. With this, his next novel, Joe Abercrombie is once again venturing in a new direction, and on a new adventure, with one of the most enduring, powerful and popular characters of the First Law Trilogy. It's going to be their biggest challenge yet ...

Book Description

The past never stays buried.

This is the new violent, bloody and fast paced tale from SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Joe Abercrombie.

From the Back Cover

They burned her home.

They stole her brother and sister.

But vengeance is following.

Shy South hoped to bury her bloody past and ride away smiling, but she'll have to sharpen up some bad old ways to get her family back, and she's not one to flinch from what needs doing. She sets off in pursuit with only a pair of oxen and her cowardly old setp father Lamb for company. But it turns out Lamb's buried a bloody past of his own. And out in the lawless Far Country the past never stays buried.

Their journey will take them across the barren plains to a frontier town gripped by gold fever, through feud, duel and massacre, high into the unmapped mountains to a reckoning with the Ghosts. Even worse, it will force them into alliance with Nicomo Cosca, infamous soldier of fortune, and his feckless awuer Temple, two men no one should ever have to trust . . .

'Red Country reads like neither a Western nor a fantasy novel, but something new, fresh and exciting' The Independent

'There's jaw-dropping violence, twists, turns and character arcs that prompt the occasional muted cheer. Abercrombie is fast supplanting George R.R. Martin as the standard by which all contemporary epic fantasy should be measured.' Pornokitsch

3.0 out of 5 stars make my day 24 Mar 2013

if you like your fantasy hard bitten and dour (and I do) you'll like joe Abercrombie. this is a great stand alone story, but I would recommend his first law trilogy as a better place to start, and a more epic sweep. also, the reveal of a certain character's identity will mean more to you if you read JA's books in the published order. red country does borrow heavily from westerns, especially the miniseries Deadwood (which I loved). this works well in most instances, but on occasion it strays too far from the tropes of fantasy for my tastes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best 25 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover
I'm normally a fan of Joe abercrombie however I find this book lacklustre and quite boring. I suppose it's a combination of the western theme and the new characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 15 Mar 2013

Format:Hardcover
I always worry slightly when reading the newest book of a favourite author in case it disappoints me by not living up to their previous books. Within the first few pages I knew I had no need to worry here. Red Country immediately transported me back into the dark, sometimes (well,a lot of times) violent world I've come to know so well. Brilliant, can't wait for the next book; and can't wait to see what 'Lamb' gets up to next!

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't be Shy and scroll South
I sometimes like to think of Joe Abercrombie as the `Tarantino' of fantasy. There's a lot of swearing, racial slurs, gritty violence, and on top of that he seems to do... Read more
