Review

'Red Claw is that rare treat, an intelligent action adventure replete with intellectual rigour, human insight and superb storytelling' Guardian 'It's been a while since I've read a science fiction novel as invigoratingly original in approach and theme as this one' Morning Star 'Red Claw moves at a relentless pace ... I was hooked' thebookbag.co.uk 'I keep going back to the front cover and marvelling at how awesome it is' Graeme's Fantasy Review 'A marvellous mix of the ridiculous and the sublime, mashing pulp sci-fi with a seedy Heinlein style utopian dystopia, and some pretty dark humour as well. It's The Lord of the Flies meets Starship Troopers. A truly dark tale of betrayal, big guns, and monsters ... This is one of the best novels released this year' Emotionally Fourteen

Product Description

Professor Richard Helms heads up a tight-knit band of scientists and soldiers sent to explore New Amazon, a lush but savage planet seemingly determined to attack them at every turn. When they are done cataloguing every detail of this vast, unfamiliar ecosystem, they will burn it to the ground and make it fit for human habitation. But when the team falls under attack, Helms and his followers are forced to flee into the depths of the jungle. Here, old enemies and petty rivalries surface as they struggle to survive. They soon end up fighting for their lives - against the planet they are exploring, the robots designed to protect them and, most of all, against each other. For the countdown into madness is ticking.Palmer burns a new path for science fiction in this gripping, dark tale of man's place in the universe.

Fans of the 70's type of Sci-Fi fiction will be rubbing their hands with glee as this offering from Philip Palmer hits the shelves. Not only do you get a great offering from this author but it has that cracking retro feel (included with the cover) that will keep you glued to the last page. Add to the mix intrigue, double dealing and lets face it a great deal of bloodletting and this tale offers something for everyone as you can't help but wonder who will survive and who will fall alongside figuring out exactly what led them to their fate. As a fan of survival futuristic novels this was right up my alley as I love to see what an author brings to the fore with not only weaponry but techniques used in the survival scenario's. If you want this alongside a great deal of paranoia (or rather lets say survival instinct, its only paranoia if they are out to get you and lets be honest here, they are), suspense and a top notch character emotional as well as physical portrayal then here is the tale for you. Cracker.

Entertaining read. 30 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone seeking an interesting scf fi experiance. The plot was complex but enthralling and the pace of the book kept the thrills coming throughout.

I am no literacy expert but I will be buying more of his novels.

Hope you enjoy it yourself.

There are hilarious and interesting points in this novel, but there are some things in the hellish biosphere of New Amazon tha just don't make any sense. Exploding trees? Plants that mimic animals and subdivide like amoebas during dissection? Plus, the horrid attitude of the human race in this novel-eradicate all alien life in terraforming, even if intelligent, expecially if intelligent.Scientists study alien life, which shall be obliterated by killer soldiers and superarmed robots controlled by a central brain named Genius who runs the security in human colony Xabar. But Genius is taken over by hostile forces, and robots kill almost every human, save few survivors, who will have to confront the horrible ferocity of life in new Amazon. Resident Evil meets the Venus of Stanley Weinbaum, an author much more able in designing aliens. And the protagonists are no gentle Ham Hammonds, some of them are killer maniacs. The revelation of what caused the Xabar disaster will come as a shock... if you read that far. The Author is so bent in "Epater le lecteur" that he forgets scientific plausibility and narrative coherency. in a word, this book is Uneven...but it's heer pleasure to read!
