Product Description

An archaeologist studying on a site at Whalsay discovers a set of human remains. Is it an ancient find - or a more contemporary mystery? Then an elderly woman is shot in a tragic accident.

Shetland detective Jimmy Perez is called in by her grandson - his own colleague, Sandy Wilson. Mima Wilson was a recluse. She had her land, her pride and her family. As Jimmy looks to the islanders for answers, he finds instead two families whose feud has lasted generations. Surrounded by people he doesn't know, Jimmy finds himself out of his depth.

Then there's another death and Jimmy must dig up old secrets to stop a new killer from striking again...

This is number three in a planned quartet of books. I'm suprised these haven't broken through in the best sellers list Once again Inspector Perez is called upon to gently quiz a tight knit community this time there is a body but it looks like a tragic accident an old lady shot whilst one of the locals is out shooting rabbits
the victim the grandmother of his sidekick Sandy
perez's gut feeling is nagging him was this just simply an accident just when it looks like he is willing to accept this conclusion another body is found this time it looks like suicide but the two deaths are linked and Perez not only has bone in his mouth but an archeologist dig has uncovered human bones that might not be as old as first thought

This is a real page turner and once again Ann Cleeves manages to pull the Shetland wool over your eyes right to the very last page
The location is key the islands of Scotland where secrets and lies are buried deep in this case quite literally
I for one hope that the author changes her mind and extends this series from a quartet
but will definately be Reading the 4th book and hopefully more people will have discovered the first three by that time

I enjoyed the third in the Shetland series as much as the others.

I especially enjoyed the development of Sandy's character as he played more of a peripheral role in the other books but his feelings, fears and desires are brought out in this one perfectly.

From the previous encounters we might have assumed that Sandy was the typical, loutish, 'worldly wise' young man but here we find that no matter how they look from the outside anyone can have a sensitive side.

I really looked forward to settling down at the end of the day to a few more chapters and tried not to read it too fast so I could string out the enjoyment for as long as possible.

A visit to the Shetlands is definitely on the cards sometime soon!

This is the third of the Shetland quartet and the best so far. The apparently accidental shooting of an elderly woman takes Perez to Whalsay the island from whence his often bumbling assistant Sandy comes. There is an archeological dig on the old woman's croft which brings newcomers to the island adding an extra dimension to the mystery the answer to which may be buried in the past. There is a really good sense of place here as in the rest of the Shetland Quartet with the sense of insularity and also the huge chasm between the islands and the wider world. Just like the other books in the series, I didn't guess who the culprit was. There were red herrings aplenty although you never get the impression that the author is pulling a fast one, and enough twists and turns to make you want to keep reading. I would definitely recommend this series of books if you enjoy a traditional whodunnit without graphic descriptions of violence and a strong sense of character and plot. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
