This is the first book I read that really taught me to hope! Up to that point, almost all the material I had come across dealt in detail with symptoms, diagnosis, what CFS/ME was and a few ideas on self-help, but nothing really encouraging. This book is the opposite. It starts with an introduction encouraging you to get into the mindset for recovery then a few chapters on what the illness is. After that, the author begins to explore the concept of mind-body medicine and such health restorers as deep relaxation and imagery, (several tecniques/ideas for each are detailed), using your illness as a teacher and really getting into how you feel about the illness and how to put that knowledge to good use to help you win against it. It was also SO nice to read an author who is experienced in helping people win the fight against CFS/ME dissuading people from doing ME research! I've known some who will pour all their limited resources into health research instead of doing something pleasant that will actually contribute to their well-being!
He doesn't promise overnight results, but is balanced and positive. He doesn't talk about medications, supplements or anything like that. His focus is on what the mind can do to help the body heal, although he does cover some other areas in brief too. Really, you need a good combination of healthful nutrution, graded activity and the concepts covered in this book for success. The thing I liked best about the material he focuses on though, is that even the severely limited and bed-bound can do the relaxation and visualisation exercises.
Do give it a try, you have nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain.
