For the price of a single cd here you have from JSP records the complete works of Jimmie Rodgers - everything. You will not need to look anywhere else. 5 cds - count 'em... The only better deal anywhere is JSP's other brilliant Carter Family box set, also unbelievable value.
So this is for anyone wishing to add to their JR collection OR for newcomers - get the lot while you're at it! If maybe a third of Jimmie's 6 year output is lightweight and repetitive (how many blue yodels can you take?) the other two thirds is delicious - Jimmie is sentimental, heartfelt, tough, good-humoured and his music features a whole range of early styles from solo guitar through to jazz bands, string bands and Hawaiian guitars. Where the Carter Family ploughed one straight furrow, Jimmie is all over the map - a parlour ballad here, a blues there. Later Country singers pretended to be the genuine article Jimmie Rodgers really was. How can you not respect a guy with TB who sings "Whippin' that ol TB" ? He knew he wasn't, and he didn't, and it killed him aged 36 in 1933. 70 years later we still love the man and his great songs.
Let's hear it for JSP Records - either they're crazy and about to go bust or every other reissue record company is ripping us off. One or the other.

There have been three Jimmie Rodgers - a blues singer, a country singer and a pop/folk singer - the country singer is the subject of this compilation. This Jimmie Rodgers became the first legend of country music.
Jimmie only recorded 111 songs, although altenative versions exist of some of them. Diehard fans who want absolutely everything can find it on the Bear Family boxed set. I love Bear Family's boxed sets - I have quite a few myself - but this box is much better value for money and contains more than enough of Jimmie's music to satisfy most people.
So what's missing? All the alternate versions and just one other song - My time ain't long. I don't know why they left out this particular song, but it's not one that I'm familiar with. Anyway, I would have been content with a double-CD containing 40 or 50 tracks. A single CD could not accomodate all the tracks that I want.
Jimmie's famous songs (all here) include In the jailhouse now, Daddy and home (superbly revived by Tanya Tucker in 1987 or so), Waiting for a train, Any old time, Mule skinner blues (listed as Blue yodel number 8 - a cover of this song provided Dolly Parton with her first major solo American country hit in 1970), Miss the Mississippi and you (brilliantly covered by Emmylou Harris and Crystal Gayle, among others), Peach picking time in Georgia and others too many to mention. Merle Haggard once recorded a whole album of Jimmie's songs and new covers of his songs are still recorded on a regular basis.
In Jimmie's version of Frankie and Johnny, Frankie kills Johnny after discovering him being unfaithful and is sentenced to death in an electric chair. How different from Johnny Cash's version !
I don't think I'll ever need another collection of Jimmie's music - this has everything I want and much more besides - and it's all wonderful. Unless you particularly want My time ain't long, this is the only collection of his that you'll ever need.

After years of building up my collection of Jimmie Rodgers music on vinyl and cds, theres always been lots of overlap, and still quiet a few gaps, J.S.P. come along and cover the lot. With even In the jailhouse now 2.(I think this is better than no1)this is the best value box set of Jimmie Rodgers ever. You will not do better than this.

This is a fine collection of recordings by the legendary Jimmie Rodgers, the originator of the "Blue Yodel", the Singing Breakman, the "father of country music", who was the most popular of all country music performers at the time.
I only have two complaints with this selection, which is presented in correct chronological order of recording with full discographical details provided. Firstly, the cover says "all the classic material from one of America's greats" and secondly it states "110 classic sides". Neither of these statements is correct as there are two tracks missing from the issue. Rodgers made 111 sides and there are only 109 included on the 5 discs. The missing tracks are "Home Call' recorded 12 August 1929 and "My Time Ain't Long" recorded 4 February 1932. This second title was prophetic as he died just over a year later from the TB which had plagued him for years. It is also unfortunate that the cover of this set shows a performer with a cigarette in his mouth and surrounded by clouds of smoke, while Rodgers himself was, of necessity, a non-smoker. Also it shows him dressed in the full regalia of a cowboy, whereas Rodgers was a breakman on the railroad and many of his songs reflect this area of activity.
The set is well presented with relatively accurate sleeve notes by a certain Drew Kent with each of the five discs. If you can't afford the Bear Family issue (which is complete but very expensive), then this issue is essential buying for any lover of original recordings of early country music at its best.
