Synopsis

Updated editions to the bestselling series. They have been completely redesigned in colour. Includes improved backing tracks (on the CD editions) and new songs have been added. The prices remain the same as the classic original editions. John Pitt's hugely successful Recorder from the Beginning teaching scheme has a straightforward, easy-to-follow approach with attractive collections of well-known and original tunes. The beginner books are specially written for 7-11 year olds. The additional graded repertoire and ensemble books will appeal to players of all ages. No previous knowledge of the recorder or music is needed in order to begin playing with this specially written recorder course - it's all covered in the books. Pupil book and CD edition provides demonstration tracks and interesting accompaniments to help encourage practice and performance.

I used this book before the CD came out, so I can't comment on the CD itself. However the simple and clear approach of the book is excellent. It has minimal fuss on the page (unlike some with condescending cartoon characters all over the place which make it more complicated) and clear notes. The progression is also good, and shows a real undertsanding of the stages of learning this instrument by teaching tunes with repeated rhythm patterns using familiar notes and gradually adding new notes. I used this series to teach Yr 3 & 4 children and they learnt very quickly. After progressing to Book 2 by the end of Yr 3, I was then able to supplement it with my own simple part music and build up a recorder orchestra, but without this good start, they would have lost interest. There is a good Treble Beginners book too by John Pitts which doesn't presuppose excellence on the descant first. His recorder duet books are also fun and great for impressive assembly performance.

I bought this book (plus accompanying CD) to familiarise myself with the recorder (and eventually teach my daughter, who's been pestering me to 'play the recorder'!!). Straight-forward & enjoyable, especially the execises to complete tunes from notes learnt earlier. Actually got through ALL of the execises within an afternoon (- amazingly!). Having the CD to hand was an added bonus! Purchased together with the Yamaha YRS24BUKII Descant recorder and the Technote Music Stand With Bag - Nickel.

It is very useful for a starter, but it would be better if the CD is produced with recorder sound for first few songs, it is nice to listen but when you consider a beginner; as children find it difficult to understand the sound behind electronic keyboard.
