I used this book before the CD came out, so I can't comment on the CD itself. However the simple and clear approach of the book is excellent. It has minimal fuss on the page (unlike some with condescending cartoon characters all over the place which make it more complicated) and clear notes. The progression is also good, and shows a real undertsanding of the stages of learning this instrument by teaching tunes with repeated rhythm patterns using familiar notes and gradually adding new notes. I used this series to teach Yr 3 & 4 children and they learnt very quickly. After progressing to Book 2 by the end of Yr 3, I was then able to supplement it with my own simple part music and build up a recorder orchestra, but without this good start, they would have lost interest. There is a good Treble Beginners book too by John Pitts which doesn't presuppose excellence on the descant first. His recorder duet books are also fun and great for impressive assembly performance.
