It's hard to tell whether this is a smart band acting dumb, or a dumb band mining a flash of insight. I'll opt for the former (despite the fact that later releases point to the latter), and assume they're doing it with tongue firmly in cheek. Either way, tunes like "Let's Have a War," "Beef Baloney," and "New York's Alright (If You Like Saxophones)" still feel like a smack in the face 18 years later. Leader Lee Ving later went Hollywood, but none of his film roles match the sneer and menace he offers here; unless, of course, you include the live footage of Fear in Penelope Spheeris's The Decline of Western Civilization.
