Sax, bass, drums combinations have a distinguished history from Sonny Rollins at the Village Vanguard, to Joe Farrell with Elvin Jones, and Joe Henderson at the Vanguard. For sheer originality Donny McCaslin beats them all: the variety and verve of the playing is often staggering, and the material is both demanding and yet accessible. This is one not to miss, if you want to hear how melodic jazz can be at the same time at the forefront of innovation.
