Book Description

20 Aug 2010
What is the point of the early chapters of Genesis? Genesis challenges the nations surrounding Israel to a different view of God and the world. It debunks 'myths' ancient and modern and provides the basis for a robust Christian world view through the prism of its specific literary and cultural context. Genesis is pregnant with challenges to both the ancient and the contemporary world. Here are the foundational themes of the Christian faith: God's mercy; human dignity and purpose; God's mission to heal the nations. Reclaiming Genesis will prove particularly useful to ministers, Bible students and those confronted with 'what about Genesis?' arguments.

Product Description

Review

The author makes the early chapters of Genesis come wonderfully alive, in a way that gives full weight to current science. This accessible book is an essential guide for all those who wish to understand how Genesis speaks to us today. --Dr Denis Alexander, Babraham Institute, Cambridge

Too many interpretations of Genesis are not firmly based on the text of Scripture. Melvin Tinker brings us firmly back to the Bible and its implications for the 21st century. --Professor R.J.Berry, Emeritus Professor of Genetics at University College, London

A winsome, warm, thoughtful, and pastoral treatment. --Carl R Trueman, Academic Dean, Westminster Theological Seminary, Pennsylvania

If you truly want to understand Genesis and what it says, than this is the book for you.
Mr Tinker describes, in a beautiful way, the meaning of Genesis and how it always points to Jesus.
Read it and leave all this creation debate aside, this book tells you want God wants you to know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Significance of the early chapters of Genesis 12 May 2011
By RMB
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book gives a good overview of the theological significance of the first 12 chapters of Genesis. The author explains the key ideas introduced here and how they underpin all of Scripture. In the preface (essay) on 'Creation, Evolution and Genesis' the author argues that these early chapters of Genesis should perhaps be given a literary category of 'figurative narrative'. The main part of the book is based on the text of Genesis. I've not read any Melvin Tinker before, but I found his book very easy to read. I think this book would provide useful material to those who need to preach or teach on these early chapters of Genesis, or to the interested general reader who would like a better understanding of why these chapters of the Bible are important.
