Book Description

22 May 2014 Silver Blackthorn Trilogy 1

In the village of Martindale, hundreds of miles north of the new English capital of Windsor, sixteen-year-old Silver Blackthorn takes the Reckoning. This coming-of-age test not only decides her place in society - Elite, Member, Inter or Trog - but also determines that Silver is to become an Offering for King Victor.

But these are uncertain times and no-one really knows what happens to the teenagers who disappear into Windsor Castle. Is being an Offering the privilege everyone assumes it to be, or do the walls of the castle have something to hide?

Trapped in a maze of ancient corridors, Silver finds herself in a warped world of suspicion where it is difficult to know who to trust and who to fear. The one thing Silver does know is that she must find a way out . . .

More About the Author

Despite two national newspaper reports to the contrary, Kerry Wilkinson is male. Honestly.

His debut, LOCKED IN, the first in the detective Jessica Daniel series, is a UK no.1 Kindle bestseller, with the first three Jessica Daniel books making him Amazon UK's top-selling author for the final quarter of 2011.

THINK OF THE CHILDREN came out in February 2013, outselling Dan Brown to become Amazon UK's no.1 Kindle pre-order, making the top 10 crime ebooks, and entering the official top 20 paperback chart.

Kerry is the first formerly self-published British author to have an ebook no.1 and reach the top 20 of the UK paperback chart.

With PLAYING WITH FIRE, THICKER THAN WATER, BEHIND CLOSED DOORS and standalone dark thriller, WATCHED, Kerry has had eight consecutive top-20 Kindle crime books.

In May 2014, Pan Macmillan will publish RECKONING, the first novel in Kerry's young adult/fantasy/adventure series - the Silver Blackthorn trilogy.

In June, the same publisher will release the ebook SOMETHING WICKED, the first in a series starring Manchester-based private investigator, Andrew Hunter, who appeared in the fifth Jessica Daniel novel.

He is an occasional sports journalist and can frequently be spotted cycling the hills of Lancashire while trying not to be knocked off. Please drive safely around him. He was born in Somerset but now lives in the north west.

RECKONING is out on 22 May 2014; SOMETHING WICKED on 5 June; and the next Jessica Daniel book, CROSSING THE LINE, on 11 September.

RENEGADE (Silver Blackthorn 2) is out in 2015; as is standalone crime thriller DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN.

About the Author

Kerry Wilkinson was one of two things as a child. If you ask him, he was a well-meaning, slightly hyperactive young man with an active imagination. If you ask his mother and/or teachers, he was a bit of a pain in the bum.

Before the age of flat screen televisions, laptops, mobile phones, hover boards and the internet, there were BBC B Microcomputers and there were real books with actual paper pages. Really! Kerry grew up playing ropey-looking computer games that you needed a keyboard for, being rubbish at football, and reading science fiction and fantasy novels.

The Silver Blackthorn trilogy is Kerry's first fantasy work. His other series, the Jessica Daniel crime books, are also published by Pan Macmillan.

He is also definitely not a pain in the bum.

5.0 out of 5 stars More great YA/Dystopian - top notch. 22 May 2014

Thank you to the author and publisher for the review copy.

Trapped in a maze of ancient corridors, Silver finds herself in a warped world of suspicion where it is difficult to know who to trust and who to fear. The one thing Silver does know is that she must find a way out . .

So, more dystopian YA and I just can’t get enough of it especially when it is as well written and addictive as this one turned out to be – with a flowing imaginative tale of a world moved on.

We’ll get the immediate and obvious comparisons to Divergent out of the way first – yes, in this novel, when children reach a certain age, they take the “Reckoning” which puts them into one of 4 groups in society and decides their place, what type of work they will undertake, amongst other things. And that is where the similarity ends – this is very much its own tale of adventure and what an adventure it was!

Silver Blackthorn is one of only a few chosen to become an “Offering” to the King. Considered to be a high privilege, and bringing great benefits to the families of the chosen, still if you are an offering your life as you knew it is over. No-one knows the true nature of what it means as those chosen are not seen again.

To be honest, I didn't know what to expect when I started reading Reckoning. I love Kerry Wilkinson's Jessica Daniel and Andrew Hunter series so when I was given an advance copy of this book to review I was a little bit sceptical. Other reviewers have likened it to the Hunger Games but having been disappointed with other similar books in the past I decided to approach it with an open mind. I'm very happy to admit that my reservations were totally unfounded. This book can without a doubt match, if not exceed, the Hunger Games' popularity.

We meet young Silver Blackthorn and her friend Opie, two 16 year old teenagers who need to undergo the Reckoning. The Reckoning is a coming of age event where children become adults and go out to rebuild the nation ravaged by war. During the Reckoning process each teenager is assigned a job. Everyone strives to become an Offering, the highest accolade, and they ultimately spend the rest of their existence in service to the King. The series is set in a dystopic United Kingdom 25 years after the end of a war that virtually devastated the world. The government uses advanced technology to monitor and control it's subjects, whereas the normal person lives almost medievally and totally oblivious to the true nature of their existence.

Naturally Silver is chosen as an Offering but as soon as she arrives at Windsor Castle she discovers a reality very far removed from what each citizen is lead to believe through the government's indoctrination. Murder, abuse, starvation, imprisonment and torture are just some of the risks each Offering is faced with every minute they are there. Furthermore, escape is not an option.

The book sucks you in from the very first page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing new series begins! 25 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I was drawn to the cover of the first book in the new Silver Blackthorn series from the moment I spied it on Netgalley but I didn't know anything about it or the author so I resisted requesting it as I had so much to get through already and it took about a month of me constantly clicking on it on Netgalley and reading the write up before I bit the bullet and finally requested it, the wait was finally over when I was approved and I felt incredibly excited to have it to read. Now I just had to hope that the anticipation was greater than the book itself.

It is set and the UK but not a UK as we know it as it has been split into four realms (North, South, East and West). There has been a war and technology no longer functions (there are ares of the countryside full of defunct technology) and we have a king again, King Victor. Details on the war are purposely kept sketchy throughout this book but I have a suspicion we'll find out more as the series progresses. Every sixteen year old now has to take a test that decides which of the four levels of current society you will join.... Elite, Member, Intermediate or the lowly Trog. After the test a select number of kids from each realms and from each of the levels are chosen as Offerings and sent to the King at Windsor Castle, they are never to be seen again...... but why?

Out heroine is Silver Blackthorn, she's just turned sixteen and is due to take the test after which she is selected as an Offering and must leave her friends and families and travel to Windsor Castle and into the unknown. What she finds at Windsor Castle is something she would never have believed if she wasn't forced to live it. It's truly frightening and if Silver is to survive it she must fight, and fight hard!
