Product Description

Review

'Recipes from an Italian Summer were created by the people who brought us The Silver Spoon series. The book is designed by Phaidon's Sonya Dyakova and the layout is pleasingly minimal with satisfyingly clean lines and understated typography. Food shots are by the excellent Andy Sewell and the suitably beautiful landscapes of Italy are by Joel Meyerowitz. As with all the best cookery books, it functions well as a collection of recipes, but even if you're a total stranger to the inside of a saucepan it still makes for a very good read. It's food porn with class.' Caroline Roberts, Grafik magazine online, 10 March 2010 'luscious' Daily Telegraph, Saturday magazine, 3 April 2010 'the kind of book to make you instantly emigrate. ... The beautiful photography and exquisite dishes [...] had us reaching for our passports.' Sunday Telegraph, Stella magazine, 4 April 2010 'crammed full of mouth-watering authentic dishes and evocative pictures of food and sun-drenched landscapes' Elle Decoration, May 2010 'beautifully presented in an imaginative style, and perfect for anyone who is passionate about Italian cuisine. - The chapters reflect the Italian style of summer eating perfectly... In addition, the book includes sections about Italian food festivals to inspire your future visits, plus a seasonal food calendar so you can always ensure fresh ingredients to indulge your love of Italian food. An indispensable gem for your kitchen every summer.' Italia! September 2010

'Recipes from an Italian Summer' originates from 'Il cucchiaio d'argento estate', first published in 2005, and 'Il cucchiaio d'argento' - 'The Silver Spoon' - a general Italian kitchen master reference, originally published, in Italian, in 1950.

A drawing of fresh tomatoes adorns the front cover and dust-jacket of this new UK edition, with a sticker advising:-

* 'Quintessential summer recipes from Italy, newly collected by the Silver Spoon kitchen'

Measuring in around 18.25 cm x 27.5 cm, this is a chunky tome of 432 matt pages split over main chapters:-

* Picnics (pg 15 - 63)
* Salads (pg 64 - 101)
* Barbecues (pg 103 -129)
* Light Lunches and Suppers (pg 131 - 197)
* Summer Entertaining (pg 199 - 311)
* Desserts (pg 313 - 371)
* Ice Creams and Drinks (pg 373 - 411)

sandwiched between an introduction, with informative sections on Italian Food Festivals & a seasonal Food Calendar and a recipe list & main index, with the page numbers of illustrated dishes italicised.
The book is completed with a tomato red ribbon marker to keep the place!

The chapters open in a simple 2-page spread with a picture on the left hand side and relevant narrative on the right.
The recipes are simply laid out with the English title (if applicable) and the Italian equivalent (in colour depending on chapter) at the very top, with the preparation & cooking times, the number of servings and the list/s of ingredients (metric & imperial) underneath on the left, with the method on the right.

The font throughout is relatively basic and that left hand detail is sometimes hard to read in a poor light.
Often, recipes are more than one to a page, some span more than one page.

4.0 out of 5 stars Summertime is here! 26 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
I purchased this book in the deepest depths of the winter when we were up to our eyes in snow. Such a lovely book with some very different, authentic recipes. I made an incredible, show stopping fruit tart.......it looked gorgeous.....in truth better than it tasted but then I am ultra critical of my cooking. Once my veggies in the garden have started producing, I will look to this book again for some lovely summer recipes.........a true taste of Italy!

5.0 out of 5 stars I have fallen in love.. 17 Mar 2010

..with this book. It is a beautiful piece of book production - maybe one or two too many photographs on pages which could have been devoted to recipes but they are excellent pictures so that is a minor quibble. The recipes are simply entrancing. I eat - and cook - a lot of Italian food but this had several recipes that I have not come across before in Hazan or Del Conte.

I have only actually cooked a couple so far but they worked perfectly. I am giving it an early review without testing the book thoroughly because I liked it so much and am trying to encourage others to buy it too. I will come back in a few weeks and amend the review to include the recipes I particularly enjoyed - but I am fairly sure I will not be changing the star rating.

Do try it - from the library if the price is a bit steep for you. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Well presented with great photography. The recipes are simple and easy to use and use an interesting combination of ingredients that have a true summer flavour. It is entertaining just to read and I have recommended this to friends who just love the book. It was a must have for my cookery book collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Summer in Italy 31 July 2012
By Marand TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
I was given this as a Christmas present and it was a real treat to just read it during the winter months. It is a traditional authentic Italian cook book, being an extract from the Italian culinary bible 'Silver Spoon', and so to some extent there is a cross-over with other classic Italian cookery books such as Marcella Hazan's. That said, I prefer hardback books and whilst I love Marcella's encyclopaedic book, as a very thick paperback it be a pain to keep open. I also like the style of the book - it is a handsome book, well laid out and, for me at least, easy to read.

I particularly love the picnic chapter although the recipes are perfect for a simple summer lunch - frisedda (grilled bread with tomatoes, capers, chilli and olive oil), the rustic vegetable pie, cheese & olive rolls, involtini di mortadella & the frittata cake. As you would expect there are plenty of salads - the recipes are spread out through the various sections of the book such as the picnic and light lunches chapters. The 'Summer Entertaining' chapter has a raft of wonderful dishes, from simple easy to make starters/canapés like pear and fontina puffs, aubergine & mozzarella rounds, tomato mousse, a fantastic mixed vegetable ring, to risottos & a gorgeous French bean timbale for a first course. The main courses in this chapter cover everything from fish to poultry to roasts including more unusual dishes such as duck with peaches, stuffed rabbit and veal roulades.
