Review

Mutton dressed as lamb The mash is lumpy, the gravy watery and the fillet steak useless - your guest is a newly converted vegan. What to do? Recipes For Disasters by Roni Jay tells you how to turn a culinary disaster into a gastronomic treat without anyone having to know. Entertaining's all about appearances after all.... THE PARTY MAGAZINE

About the Author

Roni Jay is a professional writer. What few people realise, least of all those who have tasted her cooking, is that she is also a trained chef. OK, so it was 25 years ago. Still, a little knowledge is a wonderful thing, and in this case it has given Roni both the ability to cock-up in the kitchen and the knowledge to cover up her mistakes.

How frustrating. I hate that thing of prancing round the kitchen trying every possible angle of attack on some stubborn dish that refuses to release its grip. Read the first page

This is a really funny book, and also genuinely useful for all those kitchen mistakes I have all too often. It covers everything - things that burn, don't rise, don't turn out etc, and emergencies like extra guests turning up unexpectedly. I bought it after I read about it in the Daily Telegraph, and have since bought several copies for Christmas presents for friends who joke about being awful cooks. It's a great book because you can't get that upset when things go wrong when it makes you laugh about it.
