2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 17 April 2012

This book was free, so maybe I should not have expected much, but it was described as "the ultimate guide to the best free things to do throughout England, Scotland & Wales". In actual fact this book mainly consists of a few lines about each town or city's main museum. I looked up the section on the "South of England", which seems to encompass both the South East & South West, yet only lists 15 towns/cities. Each of these has one listing that's it ! If you look up Bristol for instance you get just one listing about the Arnolfini Arts centre, so that's the only free thing worth doing in Bristol is it then ? Plymouth, Brighton & Truro also only warrant one listing each, and the beautiful historic city of Exeter doesn't even get mentioned.

London fares better, but it still is mainly just a museum list, with a few lines tacked on about "great views" & "street markets". Yes I love museums, but there's lots of other great free stuff to do in all these places, and you won't find out about any of it in this book. If you're visiting Britain as a budget traveller for the first time, don't rely on this book for information, do some research on the internet and pick up local "what's on" guides. This book does not tell you about "the best free experiences" and tells you nothing about the sights or history of the individual places.

Although I've not read a Lonely Planet Guide before this one, I'd always been under the impression that they were highly regarded, so happily downloaded this before there were any reviews.

The synopsis describes this as 'the ultimate guide to the best free things to do throughout England, Scotland and Wales' which does build high expectations, so unfortunately I was a little disappointed.

London, probably as one would expect, fairs best. Living in Leeds in the North of England there were no surprises, regarding the North. We travel fairly regularly to Edinburgh and were aware of, or have visited the places mentioned. We've a relative who has just moved to Glasgow so there are a few ideas in here we'll probably try.

Museums feature highly throughout, but these are by and large free anyway. Probably nothing that a good hour on the internet wouldn't uncover, or the local tourist offices.

However, it was a free download, so nothing lost and I do feel it will be a book I'll dip into now and then rather than sit and devour in one sitting.

This will certainly be one of those books that will come in useful when visiting differant places in UK. A good 'investment' - concise, down to earth and contains a wide range of venues and ideas which is sure to have something of interest for everyone!.

4.0 out of 5 stars a handy book
It lets you know what is available for free or at very low cost around Britain, great if you are on a low income, out of work or have children.

Identifies free experiences in different parts of the UK. However there are only a few in each area and transport would expensive to visit those not in my location.

This isn't exactly ground-breaking. Pretty much all the attractions are museums and galleries, which is great as they're my favourite places to visit, but I was hoping to have more... Read more
