BLU-RAY REVIEW 2 Oct 2010

I've seen Rec around several times so I finally took the plunge a bought it on the strength of the comments on the cover.

Not a bad short story actually. Not fantastic either but I'm happy enough for it to have a place in my collection. Basically, it's another amateur filming style chiller ala Cloverfield, Paranormal Activity, Blairwitch only this time, it's two person documentary team trying to follow firemen on a typical night. Of course, it goes a bit wrong and zombies get involved. It happens all the time...

It is quite scary in places but I didn't find it had the same full-on effect that Paranormal Activity had on me. Again, watching this in a darkened room too. It doesn't quite live up to the 'The scariest film ever' claim from the ever fantastic, News of the World, in my book.

On the Blu-Ray front, picture quality is good but the real strength comes from the use of HD audio, it's fantastic. Very immersive.

I saw American remake Quarantine and it's sequel first, but was swayed to see this because a friend was so enthusiastic about it.
While I was initially disappointed that aspects were so similar (Quarantine has copied the apartment block layout and feel almost perfectly) as I thought it would be a case of "I've seen all this already" I was soon relieved to find that this original feels more real.
From the dialogue and time-killing of the reporter and film crew as they meet and greet the firemen they're interviewing back at the station, to the acting and behaviour of all of the characters once they reach the apartment block for a call-out, it all feels authentic. Manuela Velasco is excellent as the peppy young reporter, as you can feel her ambition and fear being portrayed as mixing in a very real way once it begins to all hit the fan, and they start to catch sudden and extreme bursts of irrational violence on camera.
The big Barcelona apartment block is a nervewracking but fascinating location, and once the TV crew and residents realise they're being kept inside by the authorities and there may be a contagious and deadly infection in there with them, the paranoia and fear is palpable.
While much of the general structure will be familiar to fans of Quarantine I'd urge them to watch this anyway - it's a more raw, more shocking, more frightening version that feels a lot more like a genuine documentary.
And I don't remember Quarantine making so much of this film's final and very creepy revelations about where the virus might have come from, nor having such a terrifying final 'bad guy' sequence.
Very scary and hugely recommended.

I'm not a huge fan of the "found-footage" sub-genre of horror. After The Blair Witch project it appears everyone was trying to get in on the action. Rec on the other hand worked perfectly, the format worked in it's favour rather than against it. The story centers on a TV presenter and her camera man who go to a local Fire Station to chronicle a behind the scenes day in the life of a fireman for their late-night TV show. When they get a call out to an old apartment events seem to unravel and spiral out of control as the firemen and camera crew get caught up in a tense "what the hell's going on" scenario. The residents of the apartment get sealed in by the military with threats of serious action should anyone try to escape the 'quarantine zone'. The story unfolds at a nice pace, with the viewer constantly questioning what is going on, little snippets of information are strewn throughout the movie and it all becomes clear by the end. The horror aspects work extremely well, I found it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. It even makes me jump in the same places on repeat viewing. This is a great movie to watch with the lights off and if you are lucky enough to get drawn into the action that unfolds you will definitely come away entertained (and maybe even a little bit spooked) and you can't ask for much more than that!
